lm_sensors (libsensors) soname breaking update will hit rawhide soon
by Hans de Goede
Hi all,
As already announced some time ago, F-9 / rawhide will move to
lm_sensors-3.0.0
as that brings several big advantages.
However this new version also comes with a new API and thus a new
soname. This
new API is not 100% compatible to the old API, so packages which use
libsensors
will need to have patches written.
This will affect the following packages:
gkrellm *
ksensors **
gnome-sensors-applet **
kdebase
net-snmp
net-snmp-libs
nagios-plugins
xfce4-sensors-plugin
*) A patch fixing gkrellm is already in Fedora devel CVS and has been
send and
accepted upstream
**) The 2 are mine and I will be taking care of them
See the gkrellm patch for some ideas of the needed changes, and howto
write a
patch so that the resulting code will work with both the old and the new
lm_sensors. Once a patch has been written, please send it upstream and
send it
to me, I will then put it on the lm_sensors upstream wiki, so that early
3.0.0
testers will have access to all available patches, and also to avoid
duplication of effort between us and Suse, who will be moving to 3.0.0 too.
Talking about this, before writing a patch, please check:
http://www.lm-sensors.org/wiki/Download
As any known patches to adapt software to the new API are published there.
---
Since rawhide will be raw enough as is the coming days, I will not be
building
lm_sensors-3.0.0 immediately. However I have an lm_sensors-3.0.0 package
ready
in the CVS devel branch, so to get 3.0.0 to adapt your packages, check out
lm_sensors from CVS and do a local build in the devel branch.
Please prepare your packages for the new lm_sensors, I will be building
it in
rawhide one week from now, so on Saturday 17 November.
If you have trouble adapting your package please let me know and I'll
try to help.
Thanks & Regards,
Hans

Bogus permissions on 8/Everything/i386/os/Packages/*.rpm

Hi,
There seem to be several packages in 8/Everything/i386/os/Packages which carry bogus permissions:

Smolt and software information
by Yaakov Nemoy
Hey list,
There's been a bit of conversation lately in #smolt about collecting
information about partitioning, hard drive sizes, and most
importantly, file system types. I feel it might be just a touch out
of scope for smolt, since so far our policy has been hardware only.
The reason this appeals to me the most is if there is any interest in
file system type used, this would be a good place to collect those
statistics. Personally, when we go make changes to the 'smolt
protocol', we'll leave out the mount point used, so no one knows how
big any given partition is on a particular machine. I have two
questions for everyone.
1) Is this useful? Is this something that we feel the community would
like to see, and that it isn't something that is deserving of a second
statistics aggregator (like a popularity contest for packages would
be)
2) Are there any privacy concerns? Remember smolt is voluntary, and
so far we don't link any information to machines other than a single
UUID that is privately stored. Mainly, the implementation will
probably be just simply parsing through /etc/fstab.
Thanks in advance for any input you all are willing to share.
Cheers,
Yaakov

[SCRIPT] Autogenerating BuildRequires for specfiles
by David Malcolm
Whilst attempting to package crystalspace I got sick of scanning the
configure.ac by hand, and wrote a script to try to automate this.
Attached is the result; you give it the path to an unpacked/prepped
source tree, and it looks inside at the
configure.ac/configure.in/configure scripts (if any), scouring them for
header file references, then using rpm and yum to figure out what
provides them, and finally spits out a sorted list of BuildRequires:
lines.
It uses some special-casing/heuristics/hacks to try to generate
something sane.
This was useful to me, and I suspect to other, so perhaps (suitably
renamed) it could live in the rpmdevtools package?
If anyone's familiar with the yum api, there's some major optimization
that could be done (I call out to yum each time, rather than setting it
up in code and amortizing the startup costs)
Hope this helps

Simplified contribution process?
by Neal Becker
One thing that I believe is overly difficult. Perhaps others have solved
this, I'm just following the fedora recommendations.
I have:
package/devel
package/F-8
package/whatever.
I seem to need to update sources and spec files in each. Typically they are
the same. Actually, I would think needing different source of spec file is
the exception.
Can't this be simplified? There is a lot of duplication. I have to
remember to update sources, spec, cvs commit in each, and then build in
each - when usually they are all the same.
