Minor (but easily fixed) bugs for someone?
by Chris Adams
I've got a few minor bugs in bugzilla that would be nice to have fixed
before F9 (and in F7 and/or F8). These are minor things with fixes
and/or patches included in the BZ entry, but nothing has apparently been
done by the maintainers. I'm not a maintainer myself (one of these days
when I get some round tuits and am not so lazy maybe I'll be one), but
these all seem to be 5 minute or less fixes.
- radiusclient-ng: bug in Fedora patch (fix attached)
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=236350
- hal-info: missing entry (in comment but not actual config)
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=425875
- NetworkManager/hal: changing system LC_COLLATE (and possibly other
i18n settings) breaks startup
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=425876
Is there a better way to poke people on these other than BZ? I know
everybody is busy, but I don't know if I should be doing something else
to get these fixed. I'd be happy to help any way that I can.

Plan for tomorrows (20080124) FESCO meeting
by Brian Pepple
Hi,
Please find below the list of topics that are likely to come up in the
next FESCo meeting that is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday at 18:00 UTC
in #fedora-meeting on irc.freenode.org:
/topic FESCo-Meeting -- jds2001 --
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/JonStanley/BugWorkflow
/topic FESCo-Meeting -- New Features -
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/Dashboard - poelcat
* http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/Upstart
/topic FESCo meeting -- Free discussion around Fedora
You want something to be discussed? Send a note to the list in reply to
this mail and I'll add it to the schedule (I can't promise we will get
to it tomorrow, since we have a pretty full schedule). You can also
propose topics in the meeting while it is in the "Free discussion around
Fedora" phase.
If your name/nick is on above list please update the status on the
Extras schedule pages in the wiki ahead of the meeting. That way all the
other FESCo members and interested contributors know what up ahead of
the meeting. And we will avoid long delays in the meeting -- those often
arise if someone describes the recent happenings on a topic directly in
the meeting while all the others have to wait for his slow typing...
Later,
/B

Replacing gnome-volume-control by pavucontrol
by Jakub 'Livio' Rusinek
Hi,
I've found a way to replace GNOME's volume control with PA's volume
control.
I've used gnome-wm as basis and
created /apps/gnome-volume-control/rh/volume_control key in GConf.
Also, there's needed to rename %{_bindir}/gnome-volume-control by adding
".real" suffix. It still works ;) .
I'm attaching a script to put in %{_bindir}/ and schema to put in
%{_sysconfdir}/gconf/schemas/gnome-volume-control.schemas (by editing
file and pasting XML tree).

[ANSWER] Fonts and Fedora spins
by Nicolas Mailhot
Hi,
To all the Fedora spin maintainers out there, please note the following:
1. The main fonts group was changed from base-x to fonts at Fedora 8
time.
2. This change may not have been obvious then because font packages
were moved progressively, but it is pretty effective now.
3. Current fonts comps organisation is described in
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Fonts/Packaging/Policy
(as reviewed by FESCO)
Basically
- distro-wide modern fonts are in the fonts group
- distro-wide legacy fonts are in legacy-fonts
- script-specific fonts are in the corresponding localization groups
There are still some fonts leftovers in base-x that no one dared nuke
yet, but they're only used by non-fontconfig legacy apps.
Therefore if you only include base-x in your spin as in pre-Fedora 8
times your font selection is going to be underwhelming
Regards,

Tools to examine build logs?
by Michael Schwendt
What do you use to search build logs for the various warnings printed by
"configure", the compiler and other tools?
For a long time I've used the following simple shell function for building
from source rpms and automatically collecting the output in log files:
function rpmb {
name=$(rpm -qp --qf %{name} $1)
ver=$(rpm -q --whatprovides redhat-release --qf %{version})
logname=build.$name.$ver.log
echo "Build for:" $(cat /etc/redhat-release) | tee -a $logname
rpmbuild --rebuild $1 2>&1 | tee -a $logname
#rpmblstrip.pl $logname > $logname.stripped
}
The last line tried to grep various warnings plus a few things like
"yes/no" feature status output from configure scripts, saving the time
needed to skim over build logs. I messed it up when adding to it commands
to watch for PIC builds and no-%optflags builds. That's why it is disabled.
So, what do you use to examine build logs from mock or plain rpmbuild?
Do you always display the complete logs?

Opinion: Preferred Applications & Removable Drives and Media
by Mark
Hey,
I would like to know the developers opinion about the double preferred
applications.
You have:
"Preferred Applications" which does:
- Internet
- - Web Browser
- - Mail Client
- Multimedia
- - Multimedia Player
- System
- - Terminal Emulator
- Accessibility
- - Visual
- - Mobility
And you have:
"Removable Drives and Media" which does:
- Storage
- - Rem. Storage
- - Blanc CD and DVD
- Multimedia
- - Audio CD discs
- - Video DVD discs
- - Portable Music players
- Cameras
O well.. you get the point till here.
Now what i mean is that those 2 programs each manage there own
preferred applications which is really confusion. I just spend a few
hours to find out where to change the Autoplay for DVD's (and i'm
close to a advanced linux/fedora user) which was set at totem and i
wanted to have mplayer.
My idea would be to drop the 2 existing applications completely and
create 1 new application to handle the preferred applications for all
programs (internet) and hardware (video dvd).
The advantages
---------------------
- One place for all preferred applications
- Preferred apps can be found where they are expected
- way more user friendly (that's what fedora wants right?)
And i'm sure there are a lot more
The disadvantages
------------------------
- A new application has to be made so time (and perhaps money) has to
be put into this
So.. what are your thoughts about this one?
I'm probably gonna fill in a feature request on gnome's bugzilla but
some feedback about this one would be nice.

To me, that isn't functionality for the client, it is functionality
for the server / cache.
It is a feature of WSUS - the ability to approve updates and only
allow clients to "see" the approved ones and not any other.
Right now, there isn't a lot of intelligence built into the server
end ( MirrorManager excepted ) of the update process. The
repositories serve static files, that's it. Fedora can't ask any more
from mirrors. If in your environment you want to control how clients
get updated, then it makes sense to me that centralized control from
the server side and keeping the client side "dumb" is better. You
only have to distribute the repo configuration to use the controlled
repo once, instead of distributing specific update lists continually.
That control is one of the reasons why as an admin I am interested in
InstantMirror and this discussion.
