Submitting new packages to F-10
by Ville Skyttä
Hi,
I just built a freshly reviewed and accepted new package for F-10. Now I'd
like it to be included in F-10 with the first batch of updates shipped for
it. But "make update" does not work for me. My "common" dir is up to date,
and Koji shows that the build is tagged with dist-f10-updates-candidate. Did
I miss something?

looking for pymol tester/comaintainer for EL5
by Tim Fenn
With a good chunk of help, I now have fedora builds of pymol available
(see bugzilla ID 462251 for the full details). However, I'd like to
have some help with building/testing for EL5, as I'd like to make it
available but don't have an EL box to explicitly test on.
Many thanks,
Tim

Packaging Hobbit (network monitor) - anyone interested in helping out?
by Roland Wolters
Hi list,
currently I am trying to package hobbit (client + server) for EPEL and Fedora.
I have to do that anyway, but it would be nice to have high quality packages
upstream in the EPEL/Fedora repositories.
However, I'm only used to "light" packages where configure, make, make install is
sufficient. Hobbit, in contrast, is a real beast, and needs quite some deep
knowledge in init scripting and other stuff.
I started with the upstream provided RPMs and the ones I found at
razorsedge.org and tried to come up with something. Currently I have packages
which at least work - but which are pretty ugly, use quite some dark magic and
are not at all compliant to rpmlint, Fedora's principles or even good taste.
So, is there anyone who wants to help out with the packages? I would agree to
be the maintainer of the packages once they are in the repositories.
Additionally, the Debian package maintainer already agreed to help with the
packaging and together we would try to ask upstream for adjustments, fixes and
other stuff to make life easier for packagers (and maybe admins/users) in the
mid term.
The current version is here:
www.credativ.com/~rwo/hobbit-4.2.0-1.src.rpm
DON'T use that in production yet!
What is still missing:
- Making the init files pretty:
Currently the init files launch another script whcih behaves like just a nother
init file. That can be made easier I think. Also/Maybe du to that, the init
files do not properly react to start/stop in case of problems, and not all
processes are shut down properly.
- pid files:
Currently pid files lie in /var/log/hobbit/, but should at least be in
/var/run/hobbit. Due to the shell magic already done by upstream this might be
more difficult than it sounds now.
- Licences:
The package seems to be GPL2, but some files are BSD and PD, this need to be
addresed in the spec file.
- Installation:
Right now the server requires the client due to some files included with teh
client package. However, server and client must not run together, so the
question is if this should be checked at runtime (current solution) or with
package excludes (like razorsedge.org does, for example).
- General Cleaning:
As mentioned above, there is much too much dark magic in all the files around
Hobbit, so it will be necessary in the long term to clean all the shell
scripts to make them at least Fedora/EPEL compliant, or, even better,
distribution agnostic.
- Upstream:
There is already a set of patches included since upstream still hasn't
released a new version. Also, quite some shell magic really hurts the
packagers (Debian as well as "us"), so it might be helpfull to talk to
upstream together.
So, as I said, the package is ugly, and this task is for people who need a
challenge. However, Hobbit is quite a nice program and it is worth it.
Best regards,
Roland

Firewalls and inter-team communication, was: Browser mode for nautilus

A bit off-topic for what's really my concern with this mail, but anyway:
that's probably because chroot() is seen by many as not being a security
tool(*), i.e. it's giving a false sense of security that should be
avoided, which would be consistent with comments made in this thread.
(*): In short: If the process can or is run as root, it can escape a
chroot "jail", if it's running as a normal user, it can't really do the
bad things a chroot environment would inhibit.
What I find a bit puzzling is that many people in this thread made
comments about the firewall being broken (or breaking something on the
desktop), but nobody thought about maybe inviting the iptables package
maintainer to this discussion. I happen to know him and if one --
depending on the POV -- might accuse him of not being exactly open
minded for all proposals coming out of the desktop corner, it's probably
because he'd rather err on the side of caution than be sorry later.
In general I'd very much suggest, when it comes to things that affect
areas other than one's own, to involve the affected persons or teams
early on in the discussion. If one discusses such matters only in one's
own "cabal" -- and I'm using that word with care, because that's exactly
how it's come across in a few instances -- and if one only after the
discussion is over presents something fait-accompli style to the rest of
the world, it very much begs for being shot down. Let me compare this to
casting concrete when parts of it have already begun setting, the result
surely won't be stable or homogenous.
The reason for that is quite simple, it basically boils down to that
nobody is super-human: We all make mistakes. To a certain degree, we
tend to concentrate on the stuff we're most experienced with and miss
things in other areas. Likewise, more often than not we put more
priority on issues that more visibly affect our own turf than on other
things and neglect how our own approach to a certain problem is
detrimental in other use cases. We all occasionally can't see the wood
for the trees.

Just as a side note, you've very carefully left out people disabling
avahi because it broke other things. Right on cue just this week, a
colleague disabled avahi on a server where its adding a route into the
169.something auto-IP network made it unreachable in the network, maybe
because that machine (for security reasons) didn't have a default
gateway. The machine in question is RHEL5, so any misbehavior on part of
avahi may be fixed by now, but this is still a good example for a
component unintentionally breaking basic functionality because its
possible impacts in "out of scope" use scenarios weren't fully assessed.
Needless to say that the colleague didn't ask for avahi to be installed
(it doesn't make much sense on a server), it got dragged in by
dependencies.
But I'm digressing: My plea for this week would be that we'd all begin
to look a bit more beyond our own noses and get to the point where
involving other people and teams right away becomes the norm, instead of
trying to circumvent the (perceived or not) shortcomings of components
or areas for which these others are really responsible.

A couple of install bugs...
by Harry Hoffman
Hi,
These are related to FC9 but might be in FC10 too (I haven't had a
chance to test).
In installation of FC9 (x86_64) if you select XFCE as a group the
installer doesn't actually install that group of packages.
If you are doing a re-install and have more then one encrypted LVM the
installer will prompt for each LVM password and unlock the volumes.
The problem is that only one of the two LVM names are there and you are
unable to manipulate the partitions inside of the lvm (or the lvms
themselves).
Cheers,
Harry

Fedora Security Tools spin

Hi All,
I just came across a knoppix security tool live CD and thought it would
be a good idea for a security tool fedora spin too.
The tools are freely available at:
http://knoppix-std.org/index.html
and are all GPLed?
Do you guys think this is a good idea, I am sure such a spin does not
exists in Fedora yet.
Thanks for your inputs in advance.
