Rawhide evolution in F8
by Mike Chambers
Will evolution from F9 work OK with F8 or will too much have to be
updated to work?

Fedora 9 Xfce Spin - Progress Report
by Rahul Sundaram
Hi,
Fedora 8 Xfce Spin included almost all the Xfce utilities and plugins,
all the languages that Fedora supports and retained the upstream Xfce
layout. There has been some progress and some things we would like to
get more feedback on certain things. The entire list of things being
considered is documented in
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/RahulSundaram/XfceLive
The latest kickstart file is available at
http://sundaram.fedorapeople.org/spins/livecd-fedora-9-xfce.ks
I am highlighting some specific changes below
Look and Feel
-------------
We did not get default Fedora 8 background in the Fedora 8 Xfce spin
(due to a bug) and icon theme was rodent which is the default icon set
for upstream Xfce You can see some screenshots in
http://www.thecodingstudio.com/opensource/linux/screenshots/index.php?lin...
The new default look and feel for Xfce in rawhide is this:
http://sundaram.fedorapeople.org/Rawhide20080303xfce.png
As you can see, Xfce now inherits the same default background as GNOME
and KDE and uses the Mist icon set which is also the default in GNOME
currently. The hard dependency on xfce-icon-theme from xfce4-panel and
Thunar has been dropped in rawhide. I believe we are supposed to be
getting the Nodoka theme but that doesn't appear to be the case yet.
There has been some discussions about the default panel layout and there
is a lot of different possibilities including a GNOME like layout but we
are likely to go ahead with some changes by including the trash, mixer
applet in the default top panel. If there is a preference for a specific
layout, let us know what (include screenshots preferably) and explain why.
Tracker
-------
I have also made some changes to the kickstart file so that tracker
desktop search isn't started by default while running as a live cd. I
don't believe that this is going to affect performance much especially
with the new tracker in rawhide which suspends itself while the system
in busy but I saw a few complaints on this and have fixed this now.
Package Changes
---------------
I have dropped all the language packs temporarily and I am hoping to add
a select few where upstream and Fedora translations are more complete
and based on demand. There are a number of other package changes
including the addition of transmission, GIMP, replacement of Evince with
epdfview etc and these are not final yet. The current kickstart file
produces a nearly 600 MB image on x86 architecture. Any testing and
feedback is most welcome. I intend to continue sending progress reports
on a regular basis whenever we make major changes.

firewall changes for F-9+
by Thomas Woerner
Hello,
here are the latest changes for system-config-firewall for F-9+:
The usage of --port=<port>:<proto> for lokkit will open up this port and
not a service using this port anymore. To enable a service you have to
use the new --service=<name> option. There are no magic default open
services. You have to open up the services, you want to use. The interim
options --no-X; X in ["ipsec", "mdns", "ipp"] are obsolete now.
To setup a new firewall, you can use the new --default=<name>
configuration option as a start:
server : ssh is enabled
desktop : ipsec, mdns and ipp are enabled
These changes for lokkit also affect the kickstart firewall configuration.
There is an utility to convert existing configurations, which will be
used automatically while updating the package.
Thanks,
Thomas

Heads Up, Samba package splitting
by Simo Sorce
We are working to finally split out winbind in it's own package and not
deliver it as part of samba-common
This is just a heads-up that some applications may be depending on
samba-common because it contained winbind, in this case you will have to
change the Requirements in the spec.
The 2 packages that probably want to double check this are:
system-config-samba owner: nphilipp
mod_auth_ntlm_winbind owner: buc

[FW: [Fedora-xen] Plans for paravirt_ops kernel-xen]
by Daniel P. Berrange
Forwarding the message below from Mark McLoughlin for wider exposure...
To make it crystal clear - we are almost certainly *NOT* going to have
Xen Dom0 host support in Fedora 9 GA. People requiring a Xen Dom0 host
should expect to remain on Fedora 8. We *WILL* be providing Xen DomU
guests running Fedora 9, with a kernel that is at last synced to bare
metal versions in a supportable manner.
If Dom0 support in F10 rawhide is sufficiently stable, we may add Dom0
to F9 post-GA, but don't count on it.
The ancient "upstream" Xen community kernels are never coming back.
Celebrate :-)
Dan.

Beta Release Notes
by Jonathan Roberts
Hi all,
The beta release notes can be found at:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/9/Beta/ReleaseNotes
I'd appreciate it if people would look over what's there and make
suggestions on list or changes to the page itself :)
A few things I realise already:
* I don't know if swfdec has been voted on yet, but it's easily
removed if needs be
* Not all features on FeatureList are listed there, please add what's
missing or let us know things that should definitely be included!
* There's probably some technical in-accuracies or missing
information. Again, please let us know or make the changes yourself :)
Thanks,
Jon
