SESSION_MANAGER env var in rawhide and XSMP spec

I've been trying to track down some issues with gnome-session in GNOME
2.23.x which is in rawhide now. I first noticed this when trying out a
jhbuild of GNOME 2.23.x, but then noticed that rawhide suffers from the
same symptoms. A bunch of processes are left in [defunct] state after
login and starting new programs complains about not being able to
connect to the session manager.
After some investigation and help from one of the gnome-session
maintainers we noticed that the SESSION_MANAGER env var in rawhide
differs from other distros. What I see in rawhide is this:
[kmaraas@localhost gnome-session]$ echo $SESSION_MANAGER
local/unix:@/tmp/.ICE-unix/2994
and he had:
local/henderson:/tmp/.ICE-unix/14577
The XSMP spec has this to say:
The client finds the network address of the SM in a system-dependent way. On POSIX systems an environment
variable called SESSION_MANAGER will contain a list of network IDs. Each id will contain the
transport name followed by a slash and the (transport-specific) address. A TCP/IP address would look like
this:
tcp/hostname:portnumber
where the hostname is a fully qualified domain name. A Unix Domain address looks like this:
local/hostname:path
A DECnet address would look like this:
decnet/nodename::objname
If multiple network IDs are specified, they should be separated by commas.
Is the current format in rawhide according to spec?
And does gnome-session just have to be updated to handle this format?

Anyone else with hard freezes?

Currently running Fedora 9 Release to date. Doesn't happen very
often, maybe once every 3-4 days. Twice I've caught it at idle with
the screen saver (picture viewer) frozen and twice while browsing in
Gnome.
Not really noticing anything weird in the logs?

ntfs-3g and ntfsprogs

What are the near term plans for ntfs-3g and ntfsprogs? I am specifically
thinking of the F10/F11 time frame (the next year).
I assume that the long term plan (goal) is to have a single package which does
everything "right" which is currently done by the combination of ntfs-3g and
ntfsprogs.
My understanding (it may be incorrect) is that ntfs-3g is a fork of ntfsprogs
and was forked because ntfsprogs was not moving quickly enough to supported
needed functionality (e.g., full, reliable read/write support). Well,
ntfsprogs has now been updated (version 2.0) to provide the functionality in
ntfs-3g and this is the version in F9 (F8 still has the old ntfsprogs).
Will ntfs-3g be dropped in F10 or F11? If ntfs-3g is dropped, will ntfsprogs
packaging do anything to provide easy compatibility (e.g., library symlinks).
If ntfsprogs now provides the needed functionality and reliability, then I
assume that all software under current maintenance/development which needs
ntfs support should be using ntfsprogs. Correct??

[RFE] Better rawhide report

I've been wondering if it would be possible to
produce better structured rawhide report.
This would require potentially patches to repodiff ( yum-utils )
At least it should be possible to dump the output to a file then
run scripts to recreate it..
Somebody involved in the rawhide report process might be able
provide more info on how the rawhide report is generated.
Any way here's an example how I would like to see rawhide report looking
like

For example I don't see why we should need an need to have an
specific/extra line for each new package

upstart plans for F10+

Since I've been asked in various places what we're planning to
do with upstart now that Fedora 9 has shipped, I figured I'd
lay out the basic plan.
To do any large-scale conversion of SysV init scripts to upstart,
we need some features that are not in the current (0.3.9) version.
Hence, the first thing is to get upstart 0.5 ready for inclusion.
For example, we need support for the following:
- Depending on multiple events
I.e., have something start only if two separate events have
both completed successfully. For a disturbing example of how
we work around this now, read /etc/event.d/serial.
- Ability to enable/disable events in a way other than removing
the file
(The reasoning for this should be fairly obvious)
- Ability to group events into sets, or profiles
This allows us to handle the sort of behaviors that runlevels are
used for sanely.
- Ability to easily have upstart events depend on SysV scripts, and
vice-versa
If one of a SysV scripts' dependencies is started by upstart, we
need to be able to still handle that sanely.
This isn't meant to be an exhaustive list, but it is meant to
illustrate why we can't just move services right now.
Once we get upstart 0.5 in, we can then look at potentially moving
some subset of things that are now handled elsewhere to upstart.
Examples would be:
- Always-on services such as dbus, syslog, and audit
- Reworking things like netfs to be more sane, when
it comes to networks coming and going, network block devices being
attached and detached, and so on
- Potentially splitting some of rc.sysinit into multiple events.
Not sure this buys us much, as right now the flow is *extremely*
sequential (start_udev -> fsck -> remount r/w -> clean out /tmp)
- Coming up with a sane network notification strategy
Right now, we have events kicked off on network changes:
- via netreport
- via NetworkManagerDispatcher
- conceivably, via upstart (after all, spawning commands/etc based
on events is its raison d'etre)
Having a coherent strategy for apps to only need to worry about
dropping things in one place would make sense.
- (possibly) having either upstart 'handle' sysv services more natively
or wrap tools such as chkconfig, /sbin/service so they handle both
SysV and upstart.
All clear as mud?

SWFdec vs Gnash (also gcjwebplugin)

Are there any technical reasons as to why Fedora seems to prefer SWFdec
over Gnash?
I understand that to be part of the Gnome Developer Platform, your
project must be LGPL, which Gnash is not, but Gnash actually works today
for the more popular use cases (YouTube and friends) and seems to be
implemented in a far better way (OpenGL etc) ...
Also, wrt to gcjwebplugin, is there any way to make games like
games.yahoo.com/pl work? I am sort of addicted to that game, but I'd
rather not install the proprietary plugin.

Stalled tlock review

Hello there,
I've this package called `tlock', for which I did create a review request
at: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=444952 But sadly, our on-going review is stalled since Ralf stopped responding(don't know why).
Now, I've no clue as to what needs to be done. I'd appreciate it if someone could continue the review process? Also I'm keen to know about Ralf.

F9 Live USB IO Errors

Hi,
I've made some live USB sticks with persistent overlays for a few
people. 3 of the people have now told me that they can no longer boot
as they get IO errors with what looks like corrupted filesystems. Has
this happened to anyone else? The USB sticks were a variety of 1 GB and
2 GB models from various manufacturers and I've never had any issues
with them before.
I created the sticks like so:
sudo livecd-iso-to-disk --reset-mbr \
--overlay-size-mb <1000 or 200 or whatever> \
Fedora-9-i686-Live.iso /dev/sdb1

F9 potential service network bug?

Hi,
I have setup VirtualBox, and set up its bridged networking. The weird part
is that somehow the bridge and my eth0 (sky2) were not being brought up on
system start! I thought maybe it was NetworkManager weirdness, so I disabled
that service. Now here is what happens:
- Upon system start, I only get the following NICs: lo, vbox0
- If I immediately issue a "service network restart", I get the following
NICs: eth0, vboxbr0, vbox0, lo
Obviously, since nothing changed that a possible bug! Here are my relevant
ifcfg files
