"Welcome to Fedora" docs/video/audio
by Rakesh Pandit
Added marketing in cc (probably better place for discussion).
Does it make sense to ship a small pdf (say having a title "Welcome to
Fedora") or if possible a video for users as an introduction to our
distribution ?
If yes, because it makes sense to keep it as small/simple as possible
what should it target to achieve ?
Points out of my head are:
1. New features
2. Availability of options for just updating system for security
fixes, selected enhancements or bugfixes for some applications
3. Ways to get support/help from community - bonding
4. Feedback/reporting failures/or have suggestions etc
Also, how much sense would it make to put a slide show in installer
which highlights features/talk points ?

Oh, because a KDE live image which can't be updated without resorting to the
command line is <SARCASM>obviously</SARCASM> ready for release, and because
there was <SARCASM>clearly</SARCASM> no way a RC5 could have been spun in
the several days between the availability of the updated kpackagekit build
(to match the PackageKit snapshot used in RC4) and this meeting.
On one hand we have people complaining about the quality of updates, on the
other hand we're happily releasing crap we know is broken.
But of course the GNOME spin "works" (for some definition of "works", they
also have a PackageKit issue which was declared not a blocker –
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=567346 , which I guess also
affects KPackageKit, by the way –, and they fail pretty much all the tests
for beta or release quality, which I think the KDE spin would actually pass,
given that this is the same 4.4.0 we pushed as F11 and F12 updates and works
fine there, though I didn't bother testing this as clearly nobody cares
about the KDE spin test results anyway), so nobody cares.

Koji or me at fault?
by Paul F. Johnson
Hi,
I've imported monodevelop-debugger-gdb for f13 and rawhide and have
tried to build it. Koji is going through the setup, but then falling
over on the build. Looking at the logs, it looks like a python
problem...
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=2034431&name=build.log
Can anyone up the food chain verify where the problem is please?

Provide more testing feedback (was: Re: Refining the update queues/process)

If it is limited on the packages the user is installed, a lot of
packages are not tested.

So here is a first ugly script to easily give feedback for all installed
testing updates that were created after a certain date (I did not find
an easy way to get all testing updates, one did not yet comment on):
http://till.fedorapeople.org/tmp/give-feedback.py
It kind of works like this: Show the update, ask for karma to create a
comment, otherwise it is skipped. Then a comment needs to be entered.
Sometimes it will ask for the FAS password using the bodhi client.
Update: rpmdevtools-7.8-1.fc12
Comment? -1/0/1 ->karma, other -> skip> 1
Comment> "rpmdev-newspec foo" still works
The prompt has readline support, so if you just want to use the same
comment again and again, you can use cursor-up to get the comment again.
Btw. the script fails in case only subpackages of a package are
installed. But if it is used, I will create a saner version.
Nevertheless, there is also now the Fedora Engineering Service, so if
you want to improve your testing tools, you might want to ask there.

It probably only means that the meta-data of the installed package is
not broken, but if they do not use all packages installed daily, then
there is not much test coverage.

Adding optional packages to comps.xml
by alekcejk@googlemail.com
Hi,
I want to add to "Sound and Video" in comps.xml
some optional packages which I not own.
v4l2ucp in comps.xml for F11-F14,
ucview for F11-F14, EL5
and gtk-v4l for F13-F14.
Is there any objections to do this?

proven packager needed - mrpt
by Haïkel Guémar
Following the previous thread on opencv:
http://lists.fedoraproject.org/pipermail/devel/2010-February/131584.html
Almost all packages have been rebuilt against opencv-2.0.0-7 (thank you,
guys !) except mrpt.
We didn't get any news from mrpt only maintainer jlblanco and most
packages have been pushed to stable .
I need a proven packager to rebuild mrpt (a simple recompilation should
be fine) so i could push opencv-2.0.0-7 into stable as soon as possible.

Heads up: X server configuration changes
by Peter Hutterer
So you're running an X server? Well, my lad or lass, sit down and let me
tell you about the neverending story of X server input configuration
changes that has hopefully ended now.
I'm just pushing the latest X server goodness into rawhide and enabling
udev, completing (from the X server's POV) the excision of the hardware
abstraction layer that shall not be named.
>From F9 to including F12 (and rawhide until today) we've used hal to
discover the input devices. For lack of better options, this means that many
configurations have moved into fdi files. As you may know, hal is deprecated
and as much as fdi files may be pleasing to the eyes, there's just no future
in them. You'll just have to let it go, even if it hurts.
Instead, we have the newest latest and greatest bits, namely xorg.conf.d
support and InputClasses. You can drop configuration files into the new
directory and the server will pick it up on startup.
e.g. /etc/xorg.conf.d/foobar.conf
"A configuration directory? Is this even possible?" you say? I know, it
sounds mightily advanced but we have to keep surfing the wave of new
technological achievements.
The existing section types in xorg.conf(5) weren't really suitable, so we
now have something that resembles the functionality provided by hal's fdi
files. A section of type InputClass will match against multiple devices and
even hotplugged ones - depending on the match rules. An example section
looks like this:
Section "InputClass"
Identifier "superhero mouse config"
MatchIsPointer "on"
MatchProduct "Mighty Mouse"
Driver "evdev"
Option "X-Ray vision" "on"
EndSection
Any pointer device that contains "Mighty Mouse" in its product name will
match against this section and be added with the evdev driver and the
options as specified. That's just one example, I've tried to detail the new
configurations on our wiki.
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Input_device_configuration
If you think there's anything missing, please let me know or add it
yourself.
Because the match rules are different to hal's matching rules, we don't have
an automatic conversion from your custom fdi files into xorg.conf format.
If you have custom rules, I recommend porting them to the new format before
updating to ensure a smooth upgrade.
Cheers,
Peter

Perl, Imap and Kerberos
by Christoph Höger
Hi all,
I am currently writing an IMAP client script in perl.
Since this script will only be used in one single use case and the IMAP
server supports Kerberos authentication, I thought it would be a good
idea to use Mail::ImapClient together with Authen:SASL
This works well until I want to really something, since the kerberos
protocoll implements some encryption of every message and Authen::SASL
does not support more than authentication.
Any ideas how one would implement the en/decryption using perl?
Mail::ImapClient brings some callbacks for this task, so I'd need a
decent kerberos interface.
