TBB rebased to 4.1u3 in Rawhide
by Petr Machata
This was long overdue, last update was almost a year ago. That said,
the update should be safe: upstream-tracker.org lists only one warning
that is potentially ABI-breaking, which is that the constant "eid_max"
changed value. That constant doesn't appear to be used by any of the
clients. Soname wasn't bumped.
If you encounter problems with TBB, please do not hesitate to contact me
(either via this e-mail address, or _petr on IRC) and I should be able
to help.
Thanks,

[heads-up] kbd using converted xkb layouts landing in Rawhide
by Vitezslav Crhonek
Hello,
I have built kbd-1.15.5-6.fc20 recently. It uses converted xkb layouts
instead of original console keymaps by default.
Basic info:
- the list of xkb layouts and variants is taken from
/usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/base.xml
(processed by slightly modified perl script taken from
xkeyboard-config package sources)
- xkb keymaps are converted during build of the kbd package
using "ckbcomp" from console-setup package
- there are symlinks from the old keymap names to the matching entries
of the X11 keymaps (pairs taken from 'kbd-model-map' file in localed
sources)
- original keymaps are available in kbd-legacy subpackage and
/lib/kbd/keymaps/legacy directory (so you can still loadkey
your favorite keymap shipped by kbd upstream if you want or in case
of need), kbd-legacy is (temporarily?) required by main kbd package
The change is discussed in [1], check it for more information.
Please let me know if it breaks something or if you think that the
symlink from old keymap should point to different xkb layout.
Best regards,
Vitezslav Crhonek

Systemd tip: service conditionals
by Adam Williamson
In relation to the 'when startup delays become bugs' thread, it occurs
to me that perhaps not all packagers / devs know about one of the neater
systemd capabilities: conditional service activation. You can make
activation of your service conditional on a wide range of things,
including:
1. The existence of a path or file
2. The fact that a file or directory actually contains something
3. The fact that a file is executable
4. The presence of a given parameter (or value of a parameter) on the
kernel cmdline
5. Whether the system is a VM (and what virtualization software it's
using)
6. Whether the system is on AC power
7. Whether or not SELinux is enabled
8. Whether a given capability exists
It's really neat stuff, and very easy to use: you just add a
Condition(Something) statement to the .service file. For details on
using these conditions, see 'man systemd.unit' and just search for
Condition, and you'll find a list of all the available Conditions and
how to use them.

when startup delays become bugs
by Chris Murphy
This is not intended to be snarky, but I admit it could sound like it is. When are long startup times for services considered to be bugs in their own right?
[root@f19q ~]# systemd-analyze blame
1min 444ms sm-client.service
1min 310ms sendmail.service
18.602s firewalld.service
13.882s avahi-daemon.service
12.944s NetworkManager-wait-online.service
12.715s restorecond.service
2.911s abrt-uefioops.service
2.792s NetworkManager.service
2.634s spice-vdagentd.service
2.589s iprinit.service
2.583s iprupdate.service
2.319s chronyd.service
10 seconds for a service seems obscene. 1 minute is so bad it's hilarious, but also really annoying. I feel like filing a bug against anything that takes more than 1/2 second but maybe that's being overly generous (by filing the bug, that is).
In sendmail's defense, the time is about the same on F18. (It's consistently a bit faster in an F19 VM running on the same F18 system as host.)
But firewalld goes from 7 seconds to 18 seconds? Why? avahi-daemon, restorecond, all are an order of magnitude longer on F19 than F18. It's a 3+ minute userspace hit on the startup time where the kernel takes 1.9 seconds. Off hand this doesn't seem reasonable, especially sendmail. If the time can't be brought down by a lot, can it ship disabled by default?

Re: Adding new group to comps-f19.xml.in
by Ravindra Kumar
Addressed all comments from Bill and also renamed groups
(virt-agents -> guest-agents, virt-agents-x -> guest-desktop-agents).
Attached are updated patches and following are test results:
[root@localhost yum.repos.d]# yum groupinfo guest-agents
Loaded plugins: langpacks, refresh-packagekit
There is no installed groups file.
Group: Guest Agents
Group-Id: guest-agents
Description: Agents used when running under a hypervisor.
Default Packages:
open-vm-tools
[root@localhost yum.repos.d]# yum groupinfo guest-desktop-agents
Loaded plugins: langpacks, refresh-packagekit
There is no installed groups file.
Group: Guest Desktop Agents
Group-Id: guest-desktop-agents
Description: Agents used when running as a virtualized desktop.
Default Packages:
open-vm-tools-desktop
[root@localhost yum.repos.d]#
Please let me know when can I checkin this change.
Thanks,
Ravindra

Seems initially reasonable, might tweak the names/descriptions a bit
(the names need to be distinct).
That being said, this would be a string freeze. CC'ing the translation
list - OK to add these two groups to comps for F-19?

Will follow up on devel@ only with this.
