F34 Cloud Amazon AMIs unbootable after updates
by Christopher
Hi,
Has anybody else noticed that the Amazon Public Cloud images for F34
(https://alt.fedoraproject.org/cloud/) no longer boot after the latest
updates?
I had an instance that I've been keeping up-to-date with dnf system
upgrades and is now on F34, which is now unbootable after recent
updates within the last week. So I tried to create a new instance
using a newer base image at https://alt.fedoraproject.org/cloud/, and
that one is also now unbootable after doing a routine dnf update.
Has anybody else seen this?
Does anybody know which package update caused it? (I saw some
grub-related updates, but not sure if they are to blame)
Does anybody know how to fix a currently broken instance and can share
their solution?
Thanks,
Christopher

[RFC] Remove supoort for NIS(+) from PAM
by Björn 'besser82' Esser
Hello,
I'm currently doing some experiments with replacing the - upstream
mostly unmaintained - pam_unix module (authentication with user passwd)
with something using less bloated and cleaner code. This topic is
currently also discussed with the upstream maintainer of pam_unix.
Replacing parts of a software for the sake of less complexity usually
comes with a cut-down of features; in this particular case it would be
dropping support for NIS(+), which has already been abandoned by its
initial developer SUN / Oracle for about 10 years [1].
Before starting some more concrete plans, I'd like to get some feedback
from the Fedora community how they feel about removing NIS(+) support in
PAM. Is it even still actively used anywhere and/or by anyone in the
Fedora universe?
Thanks,
Björn

Orphaning poco
by Scott Talbert
I'm orphaning poco: https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/poco
I'm not sure why I picked it up originally - I don't use it. It currently
FTBFS in rawhide due to OpenSSL 3.0 (and can't be fixed easily by going
back to OpenSSL 1.1 because one of its other BR's requires OpenSSL 3.0).
Nothing in Fedora depends on it but there is one RPMFusion dependency I
believe (vdr-plex). It's not technically an orphaning as there is a
comaintainer, but that comaintainer hasn't done anything in several years.

Strange soversion checks in rpmlint 2.x
by Vitaly Zaitsev
Hello.
Rpmlint on Fedora 35 includes strange E: shlib-policy-name-error and E:
invalid-ldconfig-symlink checks. It complains about most of the built
RPM packages.
Upstream bug report:
https://github.com/rpm-software-management/rpmlint/issues/718
Example RPM:
https://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org/packages/kimageannotator/0.5.2/1.fc35/...
Fedora 34 with rpmlint 1.11-19.fc34:
$ rpmlint kimageannotator-0.5.2-1.fc35.x86_64.rpm
1 packages and 0 specfiles checked; 0 errors, 0 warnings.
Fedora 35 with rpmlint 2.1.0-4.fc35:
$ rpmlint kimageannotator-0.5.2-1.fc35.x86_64.rpm
=========================================== rpmlint session starts
===========================================
rpmlint: 2.1.0
configuration:
/usr/lib/python3.10/site-packages/rpmlint/configdefaults.toml
/etc/xdg/rpmlint/fedora.toml
/etc/xdg/rpmlint/licenses.toml
/etc/xdg/rpmlint/scoring.toml
/etc/xdg/rpmlint/users-groups.toml
/etc/xdg/rpmlint/warn-on-functions.toml
checks: 31, packages: 1
kimageannotator.x86_64: E: shlib-policy-name-error 0
kimageannotator.x86_64: E: invalid-ldconfig-symlink
/usr/lib64/libkImageAnnotator.so.0.5.2 libkImageAnnotator.so.0.5.2
=========== 1 packages and 0 specfiles checked; 2 errors, 0 warnings, 2
badness; has taken 21.4 s ============
Let's unpack RPM and test this manually:
$ objdump -p libkImageAnnotator.so.0.5.2 | grep SONAME
SONAME libkImageAnnotator.so.0
SOVERSION is 0 and 0.5.2 is just a symbolic link.
By the way, SOVERSION can consist of more than one digit. It can be
0.5.2 and this is not an error:
https://autotools.io/libtool/version.html
I think these checks are bogus and should be removed.

[Test-Announce] ** UPDATE ** 2021-10-08 @ 16:00 UTC - Special Fedora QA Meeting: Wireplumber Decision
by Adam Williamson
UPDATE: first time in eleventy billion years, and I messed it up...this
meeting will be in #fedora-meeting-1, not #fedora-meeting, because ELN
is using #fedora-meeting at that time. Apologies.
# Special Fedora Quality Assurance Meeting
# Date: 2021-10-08
# Time: 16:00 UTC (https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Infrastructure/UTCHowto)
# Location: ** #fedora-meeting-1 ** on irc.libera.chat
Greetings testers! Well, this is exciting. I've been doing this job for
approximately eleventy billion years, but I think this is the first
time I'm going to run a special meeting!
Today FESCo considered[0] a proposal[1] to trigger the contingency plan
on the Fedora 35 Wireplumber change[2], which would mean going back to
pipewire's own simple session manager. The decision they reached was
that they'd give the maintainers until Friday to make improvements to
Wireplumber, and on Friday, we (QA) get to decide if we think it's good
enough to be shipped for Final. If by Friday we think it's not going to
be in good enough shape for release, we'll immediately revert to the
simple session manager - the changes to do so will be prepared and
ready to go if necessary.
This meeting will be at 16:00 UTC, which is 9am timezone, to give me
enough time to check in on the status of all the bugs before we get
started.
Anyone interested is welcome to attend, and I expect we'll make the
decision by rough consensus without worrying too hard about bureaucracy
or who's allowed to have an opinion. If it somehow turns out to be
especially controversial I'll try and come up with a voting system on
the fly, if it gets really bad we can bounce it back to FESCo.
== Proposed Agenda Topics ==
1. Should we revert to the simple session manager, or stick with Wireplumber?

Packager mail bounce: pgier
by Mikel Olasagasti
Hi,
I contacted the maintainers of a golang package using
$package-maintainers(a)fedoraproject.org and got a bounce response from
an email that I understand is part of go-sig:
ext-mx.corp.redhat.com[10.4.204.10] said: 554 5.7.1 <pgier(a)redhat.com>:
Recipient address rejected: Access denied (in reply to RCPT TO command)
I've checked RH's Rover/LDAP and it seems Paul doesn't continue at Red Hat.
I've checked activity with fedora-active-user and last FAS login was on 2019-04.
Following the "Non-responsive maintainer policy" I filled
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2011992
- As his mail doesn't work, should I still wait for a week to open the
FESCo ticket?
Kind regards,
Mikel

Orphaned packages looking for new maintainers
by Miro Hrončok
The following packages are orphaned and will be retired when they
are orphaned for six weeks, unless someone adopts them. If you know for sure
that the package should be retired, please do so now with a proper reason:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_remove_a_package_at_end_of_life
Note: If you received this mail directly you (co)maintain one of the affected
packages or a package that depends on one. Please adopt the affected package or
retire your depending package to avoid broken dependencies, otherwise your
package will fail to install and/or build when the affected package gets retired.
