[Rawhide] Blender 3.3.0 with initial enabled Wayland support
by Luya Tshimbalanga
Hello team,
Works is on the way to fully support Wayland for Blender thanks to
upstream developers and contributors (some of them use Fedora) [1].
Starting from 3.3.0 and only for Rawhide, initial Wayland support is
enabled for testing purpose using libdecor for window decoration
(currently generic) [2] and running on EGL.
Known issue is the lack of DPI detection meaning smaller interface
compared to the screen resolution.
It will be great to help upstreaam pushing the full use of Wayland
implementation of Blender as Fedora is currently the leading edge on
that department. Full list of progress on [1].

Fwd: F36 BTRFS crashed
by Brian Clark
Hello,
About a 2 weeks ago using VirtualBox I started up a Fedora 36
Workstation, then start making a ruby on rails web app. This evening
when I started up the project file I only got to emergency mode
because the filesystem is not mountable. I did a quick google search
on the error and found that the recommended action is to send the
BTRFS email list the problem so they could help. So that's what I
did. (attaching that email to this one) After sending the email I did
continue to look for the answer online. I found the closest errors to
my own were also Virtual Machines. Unfortunately, I found no
solutions to my problem (in fact several never received answers even
though they were asked in 2020 and 2021.)
IMO: It looks like BTRFS and virtual machines do not play well
together. Is there any way for installation files to detect the VM
and option to different filesystem? Or at least give a warning. I
wish this wouldn't have happened at all but I am certainly glad this
happened at 1.5 weeks instead of 10 weeks into the project.
Brian Clark
Hello,
I have a Fedora 36 Workstation running as a VirtualBox. This evening
I started it up to the error above and is now sitting at an emergency
boot prompt. I am going to have to type some of the needed
information because the trouble system is not booted far enough to
allow copy/paste.

Label: 'fedora-LIVE' uuid: ...
Total device 1 FS size 5.1 GB
devid 1 39GB used 6.52 GB path /dev/sda2

Any help would be appreciated to recover the data.
Thanks in advance,

OpenPrinting NEWS from Linux Plumbers 2022 AKA feel free to try
driverless printing and printer applications in SNAPs
by Zdenek Dohnal
Hi all,
I've virtually attended OpenPrinting Micro Conference on Linux Plumbers
2022 and took notes about our latest development - the notes are in
attachment.
From the development field the highlight is that *we don't release CUPS
2.5 (and 3.0) until we have full OAuth support*, which will replace
Kerberos support in CUPS 3.0. Currently we have OAuth requests
implemented, but we are missing several fundamental internals to make it
properly working.
But the biggest highlight is that *all printer driver packages**from
Debian* (we don't have any additional printer driver packages in Fedora
in comparison to Debian, so Fedora printer drivers should be covered by
them as well) *are now covered by printer applications*, so you can test
how your printer will work with printer application (in case your
printer doesn't support driverless standards or driverless standard has
missing functionality you need).
Unfortunately there are currently only printer applications in SNAP,
because I'm waiting on cups-filters 2.0, which is required for printer
applications, but the code base is the same as it will be in RPMs, so it
would be great to test the printer applications as soon as possible.
*HOW TO TEST:*
*A) HOW TO TEST A PRINTER via PRINTER APPLICATION*
1. install snapd
$ sudo dnf -y install snapd
$ sudo ln -s /var/lib/snapd/snap /snap
2. install the SNAP of printer application and run it - right now you
have to choose it by yourself according the driver package you use
(ps-printer-app is for postscript printers, which usually live in
foomatic and hplip packages, hplip-printer-app is for all printers from
hplip package, gutenprint-printer-app for gutenprint, and all others
probably by ghostscript-printer-app), but GNOME control center is
working on their automatic installation based on your model:
$ sudo snapd install --edge ps-printer-app
$ sudo snapd run ps-printer-app
Then go to its web interface at http://localhost:8000 (https is
available as well, but Firefox complains about self signed cert, which
is IMO harmless on localhost service)
3. click on 'Add Printer' on the main page,
4. choose the printer's name,
5. select the found device or choose 'Network printer' from 'Device'
scroll menu and provide hostname or IP of the device,
6. choose to auto-detect driver or select the driver by yourself,
7. click on 'Add Printer',
8. now the printer should be available at 'avahi-browse -avrt' and
'lpstat -e', but not in 'lpstat -a'
9. check its provided options by 'lpoptions -p <printer_name> -l'
*IN CASE OF BUGS/MISSING OPTIONS SO FAR* - report to the specific
*printer application* at *https://github.com/OpenPrinting*
10. try to print via 'lp' command using this new printer and try options
you frequently use - the correct option names and values are seen in
'lpoptions' output and you can use it in 'lp' command like this:
```
$ lpoptions -p HP_Laserjet_M1536 -l
PageSize/Media Size: 184.15x260mm 195.09x269.88mm A4 A5 B5 DoublePostcardRotated Env10 EnvC5 EnvDL EnvMonarch Executive
-------- --
Duplex/Duplex: *None DuplexNoTumble DuplexTumble
------ --------------
OutputBin/OutputBin: *FaceDown
```
$ lp -d HP_Laserjet_M1536 -o PageSize=A4 -o Duplex=DuplexNoTumble ... <file>
*IN CASE OF BUGS/BROKEN FUNCTIONALITY DURING PRINTING VIA LP* - report
the issue into Fedora bugzilla to *cups *component
11. try to print via your favorite document viewer or browser using this
new printer - choose this new printer which shared from printer
application and check the options you use
*IN CASE OF BUGS/BROKEN FUNCTIONALITY/MISSING OPTIONS DURING THIS STEP*
- report issues to the component in bugzilla representing *your chosen
application*
*B) HOW TO TEST A DRIVERLESS PRINTER*
1. check whether your printer is capable of driverless printing by
'ipptool' for network printers (once you enable IPP on the printer's web
interface):
$ ipptool -tv ipp://printer.example.com/ipp/print
get-printer-attributes.test
or by 'lsusb -v' - check
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/cups-useful-tricks/#_how_...
for more information
2.*if your printer support driverless standard* - you know from the
previous step, setup your environment according
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/cups-useful-tricks/#_how_...
for network printer or according
https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/cups-useful-tricks/#_how_...
for USB printer. *Otherwise try the steps for printer applications above*.
3. check whether you see the printer in 'avahi-browse -avrt', in 'lpstat
-e', but not in 'lpstat -a'
4. check what options are provided by 'lpoptions -p <printer> -l'
5. try to print to the printer via 'lp' command, using the options you
frequently use, f.e.
$ lp -d <printer> -o PageSize=A4 -o Duplex=DuplexNoTumble <file>
*IN CASE OF BUGS/MISSING IMPORTANT OPTIONS/OTHER PROBLEMS *- report the
issue to the Fedora bugzilla to component *cups *- driverless standards
sometimes provide less options than classic drivers, because they focus
on common options and many users are not aware of driverless printing
and use the classic drivers, so I would like to track such models.
6. try to print to found printer via your favorite viewer or browser -
check whether the printer is seen and has all the options shown by
'lpoptions'
*IN CASE OF BUGS/BROKEN FUNCTIONALITY/MISSING OPTIONS DURING THIS STEP*
- report issues to the component in bugzilla representing *your chosen
application*
*
*
*_KNOWN BUGS:_*
Several printer configuration tools (GNOME Control Center,
system-config-printer at least, I'm not sure about others) is not able
to see temporary queues or they're seen as 'ghost printers' and don't
communicate with printer applications (by communication I mean their
installation based on your printer model and providing the link to the
printer application Web UI). GNOME Control Center is working on
improving IPP support and adding printer application support right now.
Thank you for reading this far and if you are able to test, thank you in
advance!

Planning to retire mkdocs, python-mkdocs-redirects
by Sandro Mani
Hi
I'm planning to retire mkdocs and python-mkdocs-redirects the coming
weekend. mkdocs is currently FTI in F37 and F38. The reason is
incompatibility with python-markdown-3.4.x, which upstream will not
address in the immediate future [1]. Given that mkdocs is a leaf package
and no other package depends on it (except for its plugins), pip +
virtualenv is the better choice for users.
The only packages depending on mkdocs are python-mkdocs-redirects, and
mkdocs-markdownextradata-plugin (cc @music).
Thanks
Sandro

F38 proposal: Strong crypto settings: phase 3, forewarning 2/2
(System-Wide Change proposal)
by Ben Cotton
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/StrongCryptoSettings3Forewarning2
Summary
Cryptographic policies will be tightened in Fedora 38-39,
SHA-1 signatures will no longer be trusted by default.
Fedora 38 will do a "jump scare", introducing the change but then
reverting it in time for Beta.
Test your setup with TEST-FEDORA39 today and file bugs in advance so
you won't get bit by Fedora 38-39.
Owner
* Name: Alexander Sosedkin
* Email: asosedki(a)redhat.com
Detailed Description
Secure defaults are an evermoving target.
Fedora 28 had StrongCryptoSettings.
Fedora 33 had StrongCryptoSettings2.
Fedora 39 should have StrongCryptoSettings3.
By Fedora 39, the policies will be, in TLS perspective:
LEGACY
MACs: All HMAC with SHA1 or better + all modern MACs (Poly1305 etc.)
Curves: all prime >= 255 bits (including Bernstein curves)
Signature algorithms: SHA-1 hash or better (no DSA)
Ciphers: all available > 112-bit key, >= 128-bit block (no RC4 or 3DES)
Key exchange: ECDHE, RSA, DHE (no DHE-DSS)
DH params size: >=2048
RSA params size: >=2048
TLS protocols: TLS >= 1.2
DEFAULT
MACs: All HMAC with SHA1 or better + all modern MACs (Poly1305 etc.)
Curves: all prime >= 255 bits (including Bernstein curves)
Signature algorithms: with SHA-224 hash or better (no DSA)
Ciphers: >= 128-bit key, >= 128-bit block (AES, ChaCha20, including AES-CBC)
Key exchange: ECDHE, RSA, DHE (no DHE-DSS)
DH params size: >= 2048
RSA params size: >= 2048
TLS protocols: TLS >= 1.2
FUTURE
MACs: All HMAC with SHA256 or better + all modern MACs (Poly1305 etc.)
Curves: all prime >= 255 bits (including Bernstein curves)
Signature algorithms: SHA-256 hash or better (no DSA)
Ciphers: >= 256-bit key, >= 128-bit block, only Authenticated
Encryption (AE) ciphers
Key exchange: ECDHE, DHE
DH params size: >= 3072
RSA params size: >= 3072
TLS protocols: TLS >= 1.2
The flagship change this time will be distrusting SHA-1 signatures
on the cryptographic library level, affecting more than just TLS.
OpenSSL will start blocking signature creation and verification by default,
with the fallout anticipated to be wide enough
for us to roll out the change across multiple cycles
with multiple forewarnings
to give developers and maintainers ample time to react:
Fedora 36:
* SHA-1 signatures are distrusted in FUTURE policy (opt-in)
* TEST-FEDORA39 policy is provided
* creating and verifying SHA-1 signatures is logged to ease reporting bugs
Fedora 37 StrongCryptoSettings3Forewarning1:
* (was initially reserved to implement logging of SHA-1 signature operations)
Fedora 38 StrongCryptoSettings3Forewarning2:
* policies are updated, most notably
* SHA-1 signatures are distrusted in DEFAULT policy
* changes are reverted in branched f38 in time for Beta and do not reach users
Fedora 39 StrongCryptoSettings3:
* changes reach users
The plan is subject to change if it goes sideways somewhere along the way.
So, in Fedora 36, 37 and 38 released distrusting SHA-1 signatures
will be opt-in.
In Fedora 38 rawhide and Fedora 39 distrusting SHA-1 signatures
will happen by default.
Feedback
A discussion
has been raised on fedora-devel,
a summary is available on LWN.
A change has the potential to prove disruptive and controversial,
with much effort being focused on stretching it out in time.
There seems to be a consensus that the change has to be done eventually,
but the ideal means of implementing it are in no way clear.
The decision to discover code reliant on SHA-1 signatures
by blocking creation/verification has not gathered many fans,
but not many alternative proposals have been raised in return.
A notable one, making the library somehow log the offending operations,
has been incorporated in the proposal,
though the effectiveness of it is yet to be seen in practice.
Another notable takeaway point is the need to call for testing,
which would be done in form of writing four Fedora Changes
and testing SHA-1 signature distrusting during Fedora 37 & 38 Test Days.
The change owner doesn't see the plan as an ideal one
and continues to be open for feedback.
Benefit to Fedora
Fedora 39 will ship with more secure defaults
to better match the everchanging landscape of cryptographic practices.
TLS 1.0 / 1.1 protocol version will be disabled
as they're deprecated,
minimum key sizes will be raised to keep up with the computational advances etc.
Distrusting SHA-1 signatures specifically is expected to trigger
a topical distribution-wide crackdown
on weak cryptography,
raising the security of the distribution moving forward.
Scope
* Proposal owners: implement changes described in Summary and
Dependencies sections
* Other developers:
Test your applications with TEST-FEDORA39 policy.
Move away from trusting SHA-1 signatures;
ideally in time for F38 branch-off,
for F39 release at the latest.
Follow SHA1SignaturesGuidance:
1. move away from trusting SHA-1 signatures entirely, or
2. distrust them by default and require explicit user opt-in to use a workaround
* Release engineering: Not sure if mass-rebuild is required if we
land the change right after f38 branch-off. Maybe a "preview"
mass-rebuild can be done with a special build in the F37 timeframe to
cut down on F38 FTBFS.
* Policies and guidelines: update needed
CryptoPolicies section of the packaging guidelines
will have to be updated to reflect that
SHA-1 signatures must not be trusted by default
and provide guidance for openssl and gnutls.
Components using workaround APIs must not use them without explicit user opt-in
and must be added to a list of applications using a workaround API.
* Trademark approval: N/A (not needed for this Change)
* Alignment with Objectives: not with Fedora 37-era ones
Upgrade/compatibility impact
See "User experience".
Upgrade-time issues aren't specifically anticipated;
if any were to arise, testing should find them in Fedora 38-times,
to be fixed by Fedora 39 release at the latest.
Administrators willing to sacrifice security
can apply LEGACY or FEDORA38 policies.
How To Test
Testing actively
On a Fedora 38 rawhide system,
install crypto-policies-scripts package and switch to a more restrictive policy
with `update-crypto-policies --set TEST-FEDORA39`.
Proceed to use the system as usual,
identify the workflows which are broken by this change.
Verify that the broken functionality works again
if you the policy is relaxed back
with, e.g., `update-crypto-policies --set TEST-FEDORA39:SHA1`,
file bug reports against the affected components if not filed already.
Please start your ticket title with `StrongCryptoSettings3: `,
mention this change page, the version of crypto-policies package
and the policies under which your workflow does and does not work.
Especially brave souls can dare to try
`update-crypto-policies --set FUTURE` instead,
though this policy is more aggressive than the upcoming defaults.
Testing passively
On a Fedora 38 released system, install a special logging tool from
https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/asosedkin/sha1sig-tracer
Run it and proceed to use your system.
Once the tool notifies you about
about soon-to-be-blocked SHA-1 signature operations,
identify the component and actions leading to these operations,
verify that repeating them leads to logging more entries.
Ideally also verify that switching to a stricter policy breaks the workflow.
File bug reports against the affected components if not filed already.
Please start your ticket title with `StrongCryptoSettings3: `
and link to this change page.
User Experience
Things will break.
All kinds of things depending on SHA-1 signatures, openly and secretly.
* On Fedora 36-37 they'll break opt-in.
* On Fedora 38 rawhide they'll break by default.
* On Fedora 38 released they'll behave like in Fedora 37.
* On Fedora 39 they'll break by default again, including the released version.
Dependencies
A small coordinated change with openssl is required.
In Fedora 38,
openssl should start distrusting SHA-1 signatures
when used with no configuration file.
This does not affect the majority of scenarios,
only applications that do not follow system-wide cryptographic policies.
All reverse dependencies of core cryptographic libraries are affected,
especially openssl ones relying on SHA-1 signatures.
Contingency Plan
* Contingency mechanism: not needed for F38, change will be reverted
before Beta anyway
* Contingency deadline: not needed for F38, change will be reverted
before Beta anyway
* Blocks release? No
Documentation
Workaround API
should be added to SHA1SignaturesGuidance.
Packaging guidelines should be modified accordingly.
Release Notes
To be done, similarly to
https://pagure.io/fedora-docs/release-notes/issue/829
