Yet if I do a detect sound card, it finds it (SB Audigy LS?) and plays the sample sound just fine.
I noticed this in my logs this morning, that might have to do with this?

Hmm. PulseAudio is unable to open your audio device. Are you sure it is properly available in the system? Could you please run "pulsaudio -vv"? And check whether "aplay -D hw:0 /dev/urandom" works?
