Have you looked at making lvm snapshots and dumping those?
LVM snapshots are not usably at the moment: for kernel 2.4 they work with
a kernel patch only, and for kernel 2.6 they are marked as experimental
which is confirmed by my experiences (kernel-panics on creation and manual
cleanup required).
