In my stock F8 setup, I had desktop-effects set to off and then started compiz with compiz-manager since I use ccsm. After installing F9B, this setup would result in my laptop locking up with screen corruption when I logged in. After trying some different things, all of which didn't help find the problem, I put it back to that original setup and it then wouldn't lock up but just log me out when I tried to login. I can't seem to run compiz at all now.
I was waiting for the big round of updates after the unfreeze to see if anything helped.
Since I think this is what I'm seeing, have you tried turning on the compositer for Metacity?
/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager
I can enable this and be rock solid stable and have some nice effects, but if I enable compiz my X locks up pretty quickly.
That's what I am using for now. The original reason I posted was that with the compositor enabled, I got the max vert problem and when I turned it off, it seemed to work as expected. More testing is needed on my part though as it seems this is a known older problem.
Thanks,

I am able to verify that this is not a compositor problem. Though it did work correctly at first, it does happen with it off.
