For me, my only interest in the foreseeable future for RISC-V would be SBCs, as an alternative to ARM (e.g. Raspberry Pi). It's not a matter of "afford" so much as there are hobbyist hardware projects and such that fit the SBC form rather than desktop/server form, and x86 has proved too expensive for that market (and failed just about every time it is tried).
