Hmm. PulseAudio is unable to open your audio device. Are you sure it is properly available in the system? Could you please run "pulsaudio -vv"? And check whether "aplay -D hw:0 /dev/urandom" works?
[mike@scrappy ~]$ pulseaudio -vv E: pid.c: daemon already running. E: main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed.
Try "pulseaudio -k" first to shut down the running instance.
[mike@scrappy ~]$ aplay -D hw:0 /dev/urandom ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:1351:(_snd_pcm_hw_open) Invalid value for card aplay: main:545: audio open error: No such device
Apparently there is no sound card detected at all.
Please check wheter anything is listed in /proc/asound/cards. Check if you plugged everything in correctly.
PulseAudio is not going to make your sound magically work if your sound card is not recognized at all by the Linux kernel.
