- Naming kernel module packages is hell.
- Keeping up with kernel packages updates is hell (Rawhide is worse).
- Keeping old kernels around to build against is hell.
Frankly, I used the official kernel module packaging methodology by hand for a few weeks, then gave up.
I've used DKMS for ecryptfs, unionfs, qvm86, and a few other drivers, and it is no hassle at all. Recent versions even have mkrpm and mkkmp (Kernel Module Package) commands.
