I know that in general, yum upgrades between releases are unsupported.
But could someone who's familiar with FC5test3 (esp. anaconda) say if a
yum upgrade from a CD-installed FC5test3 to FC5 should cause any problems?

Hi Jack,
Typically many people find that they can upgrade via yum from release to
release with no major problems. You may find that yum chokes on various
deps and so forth, but upgrading from test-->final will probably work.
Case in point, I just upgraded via yum from FC4-->FC5test2 with no issus.

Can you really say probably? I think you are misleading people and
encouraging inflated expectations. Doesn't anaconda do some specific
actions in ramdisk that can not be done on live systems depending on
specific hardware and system configurations? If you aren't personally
running one of those situations how can you claim that other users
probably won't be?
I would personally say nothing stronger than "may" work to keep
expectations on success as low as possible to minimize frustration
when it doesn't work. Inappropriate Inflated expectations are the
leading factor in frustrations in my personal experience.
In the future, there may very well be a provided way forward to do yum
based upgrades from a dropin ramdisk image you can add into grub and
then reboot into the upgrade process. But thats not provided yet.. and
I don't think its wise to tell users they "probably" can do a live
upgrade without knowing details about what their system configuration
is and a summary of special ramdisk actions anaconda takes for those
situations.

the debian guys use this issue to advertise the advantages of their distro
but how can one defend yum here?

go back and take a look at the complaints from users in the debian
lists when the newest stable release of debian landed and determine
for yourself if the level of advertising the do with regard to live
upgrades is appropriate, or is it overly optimistic expectations?
The reality is... fedora moves fast... it integrates new technologies
at all levels of the software stack..fast. Some of these technology
shifts (especially filesystem level) can not always be handled
adequately from inside the running system where the filesystems are in
use. While the release team and developers can accurately prepare
migration magic for these situations, some of them will need to be run
from a ramdisk (like anaconda does). There is nothing stopping
producing a ramdisk image that runs yum in a similar manner with
appropriate defined pre/post upgrade magic.. nothng stopping it except
finite developer resources... and i'm pretty sure things are moving in
a direction where this will be possible to provide. BUT you can not
get around the need for a reboot into a ramdisk based mini-system so
that your actual system is not in use for all situations on in the
wild.

apt-get and dselect (i believe) are alright for some purposes. I did
have more problems with apt-get pulling a working system by removing
critical packages. Yum on the other hand fails with a dependably problem
and fails.
The compiler language for apt-get seems to be quicker acting than the
programming language that yum uses. The logic regarding upgrading is
better in my view for the yum approach.
