Hi,
I'm running compiz just fine on my FC6 system. However, I have noticed that under load (such as running make, yum update, my email client running a mail check or just my web browser running a heavy site) compiz becomes very unresponsive and thus also the desktop.
I've also noticed that if I run the cpu heavy app. at an increased nice value, such as +15, compiz remains completely responsive whilst the apps runs pretty much at its usual speed.
Unfortunately, its not easy to run everything at an increased nice value, so I wonder therefore, if it wouldn't be a good idea to something to run compiz (and Xorg or whatever it needs) at increased scheduling priority by default, to make use the user desktop always remains responsive ?
cheers Chris

Same here, when i use sylpheed, i register hanging situations. I have the latest nvidia lvna driver, latest updates and a nforce 2 with barton mobile cpu.
On the other hand, when i use googleearth here, no hanging. I think compiz has problems with high io on ide.

Perhaps the information from this thread solves the unresponsiveness for you:

Thanks. I thought I had search this list for info, but clearly not well enough as I didn't find that. I'll give what you suggest a shot.
Chris
Best regards! Christian

thanks for your info, but recompiling the kernel is not a solution for me. In my office i have a 3.3 Ghz P IV with HT. When i copy from dvd to hd, X is not usable.
It was ever a Problem for X, especially for openGL applications, to act smoothly when you have hd activity, but no reaction is a new feature.
I do not want to solve it with recompiling a kernel. That things i do years ago. I thought fedora works from the box.
So for me compiz is a nice gimmick, but not more.

You do not have to recompile the kernel as the necessary scheduling policies come "out-of-the-box" scince 2.6.x. All you have to do is to use schedtool to give X real-time priority.
