I installed jre-1_5_0_06-linux-i586.rpm from sun about two weeks ago.
It's gone now.
Oddly, there's no other package called jre, at least on my box, but something's not playing nicely with others.

It is possible that the free java is obsoleting or otherwise conflicting with the sun java.

Yes, this is because Sun is not cooperating with the community on RPM packaging standards. If you want a Sun java RPM that integrates well into Fedora, you should build one from jpackage.org.

Warren, which Java (Version) package do you recommend for Fedora, that I must no edit all the symlinks in /etc/alternatives? I'm aiming to use opencms 6.03 with tomcat, apache, firefox (java plugin) and need opencms for a new job next year. :-)

Isn't this answered in the release notes?
From the fc5t1 and fc4 release notes:
Java Package Recommendations
Fedora Core Whatever users are advised not to use the Java RPM provided by Sun. It contains Provides that conflict with names used in packages provided as part of Fedora Core Whatever. Because of this, Sun Java might disappear from an installed system during package upgrade operations.
Fedora Core Whatever users should use either the RPM from jpackage.org or manually install the Sun Java tarball into /opt. Sun Java 1.5+ is recommended for stability purposes.

Oh yes, thanks...I go this way with /opt, now.
This is actually bogus advice that we'll be fixing in the release notes. We highly recommend _not_ installing Sun's tarball into /opt or anywhere else. Sun's raw RPMs are also bad news.

would it make sense to have instructions on doing the rpmbuild in mock for completeness?

I don't know anything about mock, so I can't say. To be honest, I had never heard of mock before and was hoping it was something like jive or pig-latin... "You want to install Sun's java? Only fools resort to such pathetic depths! Start by downloading the wrapper source RPM from Jpackage.org. That is, if your mommy let's you. Jerk."

Believe this needs to be updated for modular X. I get this when doing the 'yum localinstall....."
