Need input for creating new icon

I'm working on packaging the spacenav group of programs one of which
is a gui app to setup the configuration of the spacenav daemon. It
currently doesn't provide an icon so I thought I'd try my hand at it.

Which resolutions do I really need to provide?

Since I'm a CAD guy I used Unigraphics to model and export a high
resolution image. Unfortunately the only export option was tiff. I
then opened it in GIMP and set the background as transparent and saved
it as a PNG.

Of course with this method SVG is not an option....

Any advice would be appreciated.

I've always made 48x48 PNGs.  I don't really know why, but no one's
ever 
complained.

I think that's the Gnome 2 default but the icons in gnome shell seem
bigger so I saved 128x128 and 256x258 ones as well.

I am not an artist so I would appreciate any feedback. I've uploaded
the icons here[1].

For those who are not familiar with the spacenav project it provides a
free library/driver alternative to the proprietary 3Dconnexion drivers
for 3D input devices, also known as "space balls" or "space pilots",
etc.

Taking into account my total unfamiliarity with the project, is there 
anything about that image that says "Oh, look, it's spacenav!" to those 
who are familiar?  Otherwise they look fine.

Yes, anyone who wanted the app would know what they're looking at. To

If you _did_ have an SVG, then I can tell you that this is the only
format you need.  GNOME and XFCE appear to be happy to generate all
the required icons and sizes needed from a single SVG file.

Inkscape is an excellent way to make SVGs.

The spec states:

"So, you're an application author, and want to install application icons
so that they work in the KDE and Gnome menus. Minimally you should
install a 48x48 icon in the hicolor theme. This means installing a PNG
file in $prefix/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps. Optionally you can
install icons in different sizes. For example, installing a svg icon in
$prefix/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps means most desktops will have
one icon that works for all sizes."

So a 48x48 PNG is considered a minimum requirement, everything beyond
that is an optional extra; just shipping an SVG would not technically be
within spec.
