Greetings.
The rsyslog package has been approved and is ready to enter the collection. I just thought I would ask if anyone has any issues or concerns with switching to rsyslog for default system logger in f8?
See:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/FeatureRsyslog and https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=243831
Would it be helpfull to get it pushed out for f7/devel without any Obsoletes first so folks can test it? Or should we just replace sysklogd in devel right off?
Note that if FESCo approves the features policy, it would be up to them to approve or ack this feature, I'm just asking if anyone has any gotchas or issues we should look at before it's added.
thanks,
kevin

Instead of looking at this as a 'new default logger', perhaps it would be better to look at this as a 'rsyslogd is obsoleting sysklogd'. Think of it purely within the scope of one package is replacing the other, due to things like sysklogd being dead upstream. In that context, we can do the replacement now and be happy.
It's a different subject as to if we want to "switch the default logger" or perhaps "switch to different logging options by default", and that could use some discussion with various folks. However that is an aside to the pure technical thing of rsyslogd is replacing sysklogd.

Exactly. We don't need to maintain a new and deprecated syslogger.

I think we would like to make the switch as soon as possible to maximize the amount of testing it will get before everyone depends on it. We are losing testing everyday that goes by.

Jesse, does it mean that init, conf, logrot. and sysconf file should be named same?

I don't necessarily think they need to be named the same. I could be wrong, but that's my understanding.

Does rsyslog support store and forward logging?
Like a good version of sysklogd's centalised host logging, but with an unlimited buffer size (i.e. store-to-file until acknowledged or okayed by central log server, then truncate file).

Not that I know of. However, its under active development and you could probably ask the upstream mail list if this is on their roadmap. :)

sorry I'm not sure what do you mean? Is it "-h" option?

Would be better to push this into Fedora 7 too I think. Makes it easier to transition to a newer version.

The config file format is backwards compatible. So, its not strictly necessary to change your config or adapt to it. We have the spec files set to obsolete sysklogd. So, that would have to be different for F7.
In a way, I think its best to put rsyslog in rawhide targeted for f8, and deprecate sysklogd at the same time. IOW F7 is the end of the line for sysklogd.
