Just "acpi=off" fixed my i686smp box, but for my x86_64 I needed "acpi=off irqpoll" with kernel 1777 otherwise my eth0 didn't start.

Same behaviour here. During boot up it says the eth0 dev ( RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)) is already in use and can't use. after this message the system hangs.
Maybe there is a fight between 8139too and 8139cp ??? Booting w/ 2.6.14-1.1773_FC5 works This is a fully updated rawhide system.
