CPAN RPM archive?

Hey,

I was wondering if there were any sites that have CPAN modules already
in RPMs ready to install for say Fedora or RH? (even if its just using
simple cpan2rpm program)

If not would there be any interest in creating one?

Are there any places that supply the source RPMs?  All I see are noarch
and i386 rpms.  There are definitely a few things (like Digest::xxx
modules) I'd like to be able to compile with optimizations.  I was
trying cpan2rpm today which is pretty cool, but build reqs. and
dependencies are all looked for as rpms which is annoying.  I know you
can have it ignore them, but that just complicates things and isn't a
real solution.

If no such archive exists, would anyone be interested in hosting one for
Fedora?  I'll put in the work (though spec file magic will require some
help) getting modules worked up initially in my spare time if the
community would find it helpful.  Would any of you be interested in such
a project?  I find it annoying installing modules and their requisits
every time I find I need them.  Plus keeping track of what I've
installed is a hassle and half, the idea is to use rpm to alleviate such
headaches, after all perl just r0x.

I am wondering though if anyone has any ideas about how to go about not
messing up the perl packages entries when you want to update the modules
that come included with the packages?

I don't know of one.  I'd be happy to contribute to such an effort.  I
already maintain several dozen .spec files for CPAN modules for work and
personal use, since I'm a fan of RPM.  I've developed (what I think) is
a pretty good .spec template for the job, though I haven't yet hacked
cpan2rpm to use it.

You could always email the maintainer of RPMPan to ask if he'd mind
posting the source RPMs as well.  It seems he already has an apt
repository, so it should work with Fedora's up2date.

I would urge you all to look at the cpan2rpm and perl-RPM-Specfile at
fedora.us.  Ville Skytta worked hard to modify both packages to output
RHattified spec files that for the most part "proper".  In many cases
fedora.us has simply used auto-generated specs and modified it slightly
to have better descriptions, comments and a changelog.  In some
instances however minor patches are needed to make it properly integrate
in a Red Hat-ish way.

A great many perl packages are currently in Fedora QA.  We need other
qualified perl people to test the functionality and properness of these
packages in order to help get them published sooner.  Some of the
NEEDSWORK keyword problems are examples why it is not only a simple
matter of automatic generation of spec files.

on RH9 but fails on FC1.

Some minor corrections and my IMHO, YMMV status:

I haven't really looked into cpan2rpm but I have made some improvements
to the perl-RPM-Specfile package (be sure to grab the fedora.us version
as all changes have been submitted upstream, but not applied yet).

Anyway, both cpanflute2 and cpan2rpm produce pretty obfuscated
specfiles.  Instead of using them, there's a bunch of perl-* packages in
the www.fedora.us/QA queue (and lots more not-yet-submitted ones at
cachalot.mine.nu/1/SRPMS.fdr/) which are based on a template which is
based on earlier discussions in bugzilla.fedora.us and fedora-devel at
fedora.us list.

I've just submitted the specfile template to
https://bugzilla.fedora.us/show_bug.cgi?id=1010 for comments. 
cpanflute2 and/or cpan2rpm could possibly be tweaked more towards this. 
The main difference currently with the template and cpanflute2 is that
the template takes care of removing more unneeded files and bluntly
works around the unowned dirs issue in the past and current RH and FC
perl packages,

For some weird reason, even though perl module packages (especially when
a template is consistently used) are trivial to review, the QA process
seems to take a long time.  Help is certainly welcome in this area.
