Or another suggestion - I'm not an expert - but what about a net-upgrade where anaconda uses presto data to upgrade the old system to the new one. Slightly OT, but is there any chance of getting openoffice.org-core working better as a presto update?

That should be possible with preupgrade (though I'm not sure whether it works with the current preupgrade or not).
