rawhide report: 20031016 changes
by Build System
Updated Packages:
XFree86-4.3.0-40
----------------
* Mon Oct 13 2003 Mike A. Harris <mharris(a)redhat.com> 4.3.0-40
- More xfs initscript cleanups
- Added XFree86-4.3.0-ia64-drm-locking.patch from John Dennis, to fix DRI
locking deadlock on ia64 architecture (#104338,103936)
* Fri Oct 10 2003 Mike A. Harris <mharris(a)redhat.com> 4.3.0-39
- Fixed brown paper bag bug - missing "; then" in if clause of xfs initscript
* Thu Oct 09 2003 Mike A. Harris <mharris(a)redhat.com> 4.3.0-38.1
- Added conditional option with_bail_on_undef_syms which currently sets
SharedLibraryLoadFlags to "-shared -Wl,-z,defs" in order to cause linking to
fail completely when undefined symbols are found. Mesa compilation blows
up, so I've disabled this option for now until I have proper time to spend
on an investigation sometime in the future.
* Wed Oct 08 2003 Mike A. Harris <mharris(a)redhat.com> 4.3.0-38
- Updated xfs initscript to improve startup performance by not triggering the
creation of fonts.dir due to new fonts.cache* files being found (#97240).
- Updated xfs initscript to handle Opentype (otf, otc) fonts by calling
mkfontscale + mkfontdir on them.
- Updated xfs initscript to ignore all known font metadata file types when
determining wether or not to trigger mkfontdir on non-truetype/non-opentype
font file types.
- Updated xfs initscript to run fc-cache if fonts.dir files get updated in any
way. This is disabled for fc-cache version 1.0.2 which shipped on Red Hat
Linux 8.0, as it SEGV's for some reason on that release, and 4.3.0 isn't
officially supported for that release.
- Updated xfs initscript to use "grep -qs" instead of output redirection in
all grep invocations, as it is a bit cleaner code, possibly even faster.
- Call mkfontscale in Syriac-fonts rpm post and postun scripts to properly
generate fonts.scale and fonts.dir for these Opentype fonts.
- Added XFree86-4.3.0-missing-lib-sharedreqs.patch to make sure libDPS,
libXmuu, libXfont, libXp, libXpm, libXrandr, and libXv get linked to their
dependant libraries when building XFree86, so that undefined symbols do not
prevent prelinking from working. This solves other problems too, and now
obsoletes the previous XFree86-4.3.0-missing-SharedXfooReqs.patch, and
XFree86-4.3.0-libXrandr-missing-sharedreqs.patch patches as well (#106661)

the -nostdlib flag

- link shared libraries without -nostdlib, which created an unresolvable dep

match the SysV spec.
- Enable ppc64 testsuite.
* Thu Sep 18 2003 Andrew Cagney <cagney(a)redhat.com> 0.20030710.35
- Hack around problem "break main" vs "break .main" when there is
only a minimal ppc64 symbol table. The former is a function descriptor
and not where you want the breakpoint to go. Only convert descriptors
to pointers when the address is in the ".opd" section.

* Tue Oct 14 2003 Fernando Nasser <fnasser(a)redhat.com> 2.2.5-4
- Revert previous change and special case libodbcpsql.so and
libodbcpsqlS.so instead. Here is the explanation (from Elliot
Lee):
".so files are only used at link time for normal dynamic libraries.
The libraries referred to here are being used as dynamically loaded
modules, so I guess moving those particular .so files back to the
main package would make sense, but the other .so files should stay
in the devel subpackage."
* Fri Oct 10 2003 Fernando Nasser <fnasser(a)redhat.com> 2.2.5-3
- Moved all the shared library symlinks to the main package.
They were deliberatedly being added to the devel package for
unknown reasons but this was forcing users to install the
devel package always.
- No need to special-case libodbc.so anymore

You should probably join the translation team for your country/language
Seems
http://www2.iro.umontreal.ca/~pinard/po/registry.cgi?team=it
and perhaps
http://www.it.gnome.org/
are good places to start.

Far more complex to do. You can file it but it will be low
priority (and I'm really busy with libxml2 maintainance right now).

Wlan problem and enterprise wlan needs
by Hemgren, Christer
Hello
I 'm using the "Severn Beta 2 (i386)" updated 13 Oct on a Compaq laptop and
are very pleased with it, but i have problem with the PCMCIA wlan cards.
It's got broken after a up2date. I can use the Cisco aironet 350 as i hade
one the install moment but when i shift to "PRISMA2" chipset card Netgear
MA401, it don't work. Kudzu finds it.
The "Netgear MA401" work to associate with the CISCO AP1200 before it got
broken using
iwconfig eth2 essid "secret"
But the Cisco aironet 350 card don't associate using iwconfig, only if it is
a broadcasted ssid (by a sheep 3Com AP at home)!!!! strange!!!
I think the aironet driver works strange in enterprise wlan using EAP. Are
the driver not up to date?
I regally shift wlan card between aironet and the "PRISMA2" card but after
one up2date it stop working for the "PRISMA2" card but i don't now if it was
a kernel or other .rpm package broke it or even when for the matter. I thing
it is a problem with the module.
Both cards works in M$ XP.
Should i go for the new beta to see if there is updates or update this one?
I have try Arjan's "2.6 test7.1.56.rpm" kernel and in that no wlan card or
USB mouse works.
I'm still missing some wlan stuff like Xsupplicant from
<http://www.open1x.org/> http://www.open1x.org/ for secure wlan login using
802.1x (most have in enterprise network) and
a wlan profile manager like Kwifimanager from
<http://kwifimanager.sourceforge.net/> http://kwifimanager.sourceforge.net/
so i can have two ore more profiles and change fast from one to another.
Great work guys.

Re: RPM problem: prereq: <file> not honored in upgrade ordering?
by Jef Spaleta
Pekka Savola wrote:

--nodeps !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
should you expect correct package ordering...if --nodeps is used?
if you aren't checking dependancies when doing the package
upgrade/install....HOW does rpm know to order a packagelist a certain
way...using --nodeps argument you tell rpm to ignore dependancy
issues...im actually shocked autoupdate doesn't break all the time.
if autoupdate is using --nodeps to install packages...that is pretty
much going to shortcircuit whatever care rpm takes with resolving
dependancies...including installation ordering. if autoupdate is using
--nodeps, then i say its pretty much a problem with autoupdate and not
rpm...and therefore very very much off topic to any fedora discussion or
red hat linux discussion since autoupdate is a 3rd party tool outside of
the distro.
Using --nodeps is not wise, unless you know what you are doing. And I
certaintly don't think an automatic tool should be using --nodeps.

Japanese Font Antialiasing - Where did it go?
by Matt Jones
Hi - I just noticed that the font antialiasing seems to have stopped
working for Japanese fonts. Admittedly, I haven't been using japanese on
rawhide for about 3 weeks, but I have no clue what's going wrong.
When i run LANG=ja_JP gedit i get nasty non-antialiased text, which used
to not happen. Glancing at /etc/fonts/fonts.conf, I see some comment
about disabling antialiasing for korean, japanese and chinese fonts, yet
when I re-enable (change a false to a true) it via that xml file,
nothing changes.
I've recently installed some new fonts, but none should affect japanese
language support (all dealing with Mathematica 5).
Does any one else get this problem (if thats what it is) - you can run
'LANG=ja_JP gedit' if you have ja fonts installed to check - and has
anyone figured out what's going on?

Distribution Size
by Dan Ulinski
I have tried to install the servern release now for a couple of times. I
have allocated about 6.6 GBytes to distribution
And still while the installation is going on it fails because of not
enough disk space for temp files created while the installation
is processing rpm-s.
In this case shouldn't the size of the distribution that Anaconda uses
for checking available disk space include the size
of the temp files needed to complete the installation?
Not just the end size of the distribution.
Thanks,
Dan

Contributing packages
by Gérard Milmeister
Hi,
I would like to contribute RPM packages to the Fedora project.
I am especially interested in development tools like
programming languages etc... I think these packages
would go into fedora-extras. However there doesn't seem
to be any information about repositories. There is also
no information about non-free packages, i.e. software
only available as binaries.
How should I proceed?
Other questions:
What if developers of software already built RPM
packages? Is it alright to repackage them?
Sometimes it is quite difficult to create pure
source packages, for example Haskell compilers
that need a Haskell compiler to bootstrap. Is it
possible in this case to package binaries within
a source package?
What is the policy regarding Java software? Will there
be an RPM for Sun's JVM in Fedora?
Regards,
Gérard

TV and radio apps
by Florin Andrei
Probably too late to include them in the upcoming release, but perhaps
nice to consider for other future releases:
Currently, the functions of radio and TV/analog video player are covered
by xawtv. There are quite a few shortcomings of this package. Perhaps
better replacements would be:
- tvtime http://tvtime.sourceforge.net/
Has filtering abilities. Can deinterlace the image, hence the image
quality is so much higher (no more interlacing artifacts). Has a nicer
and more clever interface. Even searching for new channels is far easier
and it's a full-GUI task (well, not exactly a classic GUI, but
everything happens right on the display, like many TVs and standalone
DVD players do). Generally, a lot more flexible, powerful and feature
rich.
Main quality: the image is far better than with xawtv.
Main drawback: can't find any.
- gqradio http://gqmpeg.sourceforge.net/radio.html
Has an interface that makes sense. Can do autoseek. You can label the
stations. Everything is GUI-able. On the eye-candy side, it has skins.
Main quality: at least has a GUI. :-)
Main drawback: it's a GUI app. :-)
