Recent rawhide instability
by Jay Cliburn
I'm seeing unstable behavior on my rawhide systems (x86_64) lately, pretty much
since dbus started segfaulting on October 25
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=212303). This was fixed,
but I've had this nebulous feeling of instability ever since.
Has anyone else noticed it? Here are some problems on my systems.
* Thunderbird just coredumped -- three times in a row. I have core files. This
problem is actually what prompted me to send this message. No bz yet; it just
now started happening.
* gnome-power-manager crashes and takes hald with it.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=214090
* CDs and DVDs no longer automount. This used to work flawlessly. I can mount
them manually, but they no longer show up on my desktop like they used to. (I
use gnome/nautilus, and no compiz.) No bz yet.
* When I insert a USB pendrive, hald segfaults. I can't find a core file. How
do I generate a backtrace for this? No bz yet.

Report problems as you find them. Check out test packages for stuff you
care about.

It will help weed out DOA problems, so it does help.

Need more of that stuff. Right.

I'm running rawhide, udated (almost) daily by yum. When stuff doesn't
update OK, it is usually enough to add it with --exclude and try
again. Luckily, yum keeps what it's got already in cache, so...

Not in my experience... yes, packages do break (sometimes), but on the
whole it works just fine (for me).

Can't change that perception easily...

A 100 test releases won't, so...

Test 1 should (at the very least) be there, and so should the others.

Yep.
Alpha == don't ever use it if you aren't downright suicidal
Beta == Use only when you don't care one bit for your data/machine/sanity
RC == Let's wait until it is there "for real", let others get burned

Fedora users /should/ have gotten the message by now...

Look at the roadmaps that have been published for, e.g., Fedora 5 and 6...

db4 is now updated to 4.5.20 and compat-db to 4.3.29
by Jindrich Novy
Hi all,
db4 is now updated to 4.5.20, so please if you are a maintainer of a
package listed below, which is dependent on it, consider rebuilding ASAP
so that I don't break rawhide for too long ;-)
If your package is for some *IMPORTANT* reason incompatible with db4.5,
you can switch BuildRequires to compat-db, which now contains former
rawhide db4-3.29 including header files in %{_includedir}/db4.3.29 so
you might want to update your include paths as well. compat-db-4.3.29
contains also db-4.2.52 libraries, db-4.1.25 was removed.
Intermediate db4.4.20 release, which wasn't in Fedora will not be
supported.
If you have questions or if you need help with rebuilding your package,
don't hesitate to ask.
Thanks,
Jindrich

FedoraSummit
by Max Spevack
Posting to both fedora-advisory-board and fedora-devel-list.
Encourage anyone who is interested to check out this page:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraSummit
Next week is going to be a busy one for Fedora, and we want to do
everything we can to make sure the folks on these two lists (as well as
our blogs) are in the loop as to what is happening.
That said, the FedoraSummit page in the wiki will give everyone an idea of
what our discussion plans are, as well as our communication and
transparency plans.
Thanks,
Max
