yum upgrade from FC5test3 to FC5?
by Jack Tanner
I know that in general, yum upgrades between releases are unsupported.
But could someone who's familiar with FC5test3 (esp. anaconda) say if a
yum upgrade from a CD-installed FC5test3 to FC5 should cause any problems?

gdb under FC devel and undefined symbols
by Ralf Ertzinger
Hi.
I have noticed that under FC versions since FC4 the compiler seems to have
gotten more aggressive with optimizations. This shows up in the following
phenomenon (while debugging a "mount" segfault):
(gdb) run -t nfs -o ro 172.17.128.141:/var/spool/asterisk /mnt
Starting program: /bin/mount -t nfs -o ro 172.17.128.141:/var/spool/asterisk /mnt
Reading symbols from shared object read from target memory...done.
Loaded system supplied DSO at 0xd34000
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
nfsmount (spec=0x92e1200 "172.17.128.141:/var/spool/asterisk", node=0x92e1228 "/mnt", flags=0xbfd7ec20, extra_opts=0xbfd7ec1c, mount_opts=0xbfd7ec18,
nfs_mount_vers=0xbfd7ec10, running_bg=0) at nfsmount.c:1206
1206 if (flavor[i] == data.pseudoflavor)
(gdb) whatis flavor
No symbol "flavor" in current context.
This has happened to me on other occassions as well. Some asking on
#fedora-devel and googling shows that this is most likely due to
optimization in the compiler.
While this is all good and well I'd like to know how I am to debug
failures like the above in the future when gdb is unable to show me
variable types or contents.

Dependency and script check mass test of current FC-devel.
by Phil Knirsch
Hi folks.
I've just started a small script that basically does this:
for each package in repo:
clear buildroot
yum install package in buildroot
yum remove "*" in buildroot
and check if there are any script and/or dependency failures.
I know that quite a few of those installs are rather pointless and
rather unsupported, i'm mainly doing it because i'm curious if there are
any missing prereqs for scripts or any other wierd script failures.
The whole thing takes ages of course and the test will most likely take
till next week to finish.
If anyone is interessted i'll post the results of the failures here.
Read ya, Phil

Grub password by default?
by Gilboa Davara
Hello all,
Small question/suggestion:
By default, Anaconda doesn't require a grub password.
A user must manually select "Use a bootloader password" in-order to set
on up.
Is there a specific reason for that?
Shouldn't Anaconda at-least force the user to acknowledge his selection?
("Are you sure you don't want to setup grub password? Having no password
leaves your machine vulnerable to anyone with physical access to your
keyboard")
Or better yet, why not add an option, within the root password entry
window, to use the same password for his grub installation?
Gilboa.
* I know that having a grub password doesn't mean much if someone has
physical access to my machine and a rescue CD.
Adding a small message in Anaconda about "Please be advised that adding
a BIOS password and preventing CDROM/LAN boot is required to improve the
security of your machine" should clear this hurdle.

gconf multiple versions (was Re: rawhide report: 20060209 changes (part 1/2))
by Gianluca Cecchi
I also had this problem, and now I have three versions of GConf and
one version of GConf2.
GConf-1.0.9-18
GConf-1.0.9-18.1
GConf-1.0.9-18.2.1
GConf2-2.13.5-4
I always use "yum localupdate *rpm" to sync the system
and sometimes "yum update" to synchronize with extras.
I cannot do "rpm -e GConf-1.0.9-18" because I get the same error as below.
I have not the system at hanf right now but I presume "yum remove"
will provide same results.
BTW how are GConf and GConf2 related? From "rpm -qi" of them I have
not understood it.
Can I for example remove GConf and get only GConf2 installed?
It seems that the README files of the two packages are the same....
Thanks in advance,
Gianluca
