I18n Bug Event
by Jens-Ulrik Petersen
The Fedora I18n team is hosting a Fedora i18n bug event starting
this Friday:
When?
We will start with an all day bug squashing event during
2007-09-20 23:00 UTC to 2007-09-21 12:00 UTC,
and continue the effort until the Test3 devel freeze is due to start
on Tuesday.
What?
We will basically be focusing on bugs from this list:
<https://bugzilla.redhat.com/buglist.cgi?product=Fedora&bug_status=NEW,ASS...>
but if you have other urgent issues related to i18n that you believe
need addressing for F8 you're welcome to bring those along to discuss.
How to help?
(see <http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/I18N/Join>)
Bugzilla: unless you just want to ask questions you'll need a
bugzilla account of course: see the above link.
IRC: Freenode #fedora-i18n (people from the I18n Team should be
online Friday (at least during 2007-09-20 23:00 UTC to 2007-09-21 12:00)
and also on Monday - during the weekend it may be more sporadic but
please hang around if you can)
QA/Testing: install Test2 or current Fedora development (rawhide) and
helping to test and triage bugs, reporting problems, etc.
Mailing-list: fedora-i18n-list(a)redhat.com - bugzilla is the preferred
place for discussion but if you can't join us or find us on irc, or are
unsure about something and have questions feel free to ask on the
mailing-list.
Goal?
This event is taking place just before the the F8 Test3 freeze in
order to improve the quality of the F8 release and help close/move more
i18n bugs before the final devel freeze.
Hope you will be able to join us and help squash those bugs. :-)
Have fun, Jens

rpmlint message '%ifarch-applied-patch'
by Richard W.M. Jones
What does this rpmlint message mean? I don't understand why it's
harmful to have patches only applying to particular architectures.

A patch is applied inside an %ifarch block. Patches must be applied
on all architectures and may contain necessary configure and/or code
patch to be effective only on a given arch.

Goal: Increased Modularity?
by Richi Plana
Hi,
I've been reading past posts and am starting to understand the goals of
the Fedora project much better. If I'm not mistaken, the primary goal
isn't to target a specific set of users (ie. desktop vs. server) or
platform (x86_64 vs. ppc, notebook vs. desktop), but to come up with a
distro that's easy to re-spin for people who DO want to customize Fedora
for a particular purpose.
If that's the case, would I be correct in assuming that Fedora would
prioritize increasing the modularity of its packages? That Fedora is
making it easier to add or remove while minimizing the affect it would
have on other packages?
For instance, if I desired to come up with a spin that doesn't have
Sendmail, why must I give up fetchmail, mutt or tor? Why is it that so
many packages can't stand alone without libvorbis? I know that some of
the packages NEED libvorbis, but for many, shouldn't it be optional and
something that isn't required to be compiled against (think dlopen(3)
instead of ld(1)) like gstreamer-plugins-* (which all seem to require
libvorbis)?
I guess I'm just stating a principle which should be a guiding one if
Fedora wants to come up with a system that's really flexible for people
who want to come up with their own spins. So currently, is it (a guiding
principle to make packages modular and depend less on others)?
Note that I'm not asking if this is to be a target, just if it's written
somewhere as something to keep in mind when packaging things. I
understand that Fedora is dealing with a huge system that's been around
for ages. Some people's complaints about Fedora being too bulky isn't
even Fedora's fault. They've just been dealing with a relic that it has
to modernize. Towards that goal, Fedora has done a lot and continues to
improve on it (next-gen init, boot-up process, etc.).

-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 and C++
by Jakub Jelinek
Hi!
Starting with gcc-4.1.2-25 and glibc-2.6.90-14 -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2
protects not only C code, but also C++. There have been several security
issues already which would have been unexploitable if this checking
was in place earlier.
All the mem*, str* etc. routines that were previously protected
in C will now do so in C++ as well, similarly *printf won't accept
%n if format string is in writable memory, open{,at}{,64} functions
are checked too (compile time detecteable O_CREAT with only 2
arguments (3 for openat{,64}) results in link time errors,
if it is unclear whether oflag arg has O_CREAT or not at compile time
and only 2 (resp. 3 for openat{,64}) args are provided, runtime
checking is done).
BTW, even for C open is no longer a function-like macro, while
it is desirable to fix packages that don't allow open to be
defined as function-like macro, it will no longer be a necessity
for F8 to change this.
If you see any bugs on the toolchain side (rather than newly
discovered package bugs), please let us know in bugzilla ASAP.
Thanks.

Where is Alexander Larsson (Nautilus bug)?
by Lamont R. Peterson

Where in the World is Alexander Larson? #243309
[ https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=243309 ] (Nautilus folder
icons get stuck in open state) is assigned to him, but he isn't
responding to it.
The bug was filed on 2007-06-08 (over 3 months ago) by J H Ettle and
added my +1 to it on 2007-08-29. Is Alexander missing? Is there a
co-maintainer who should be available?
I would think that this bug would be very easy to fix (seems like a
regression, but what would I know about it), and that we would want it
fixed for F8.
I have not tried this in F8t2 (haven't downloaded or installed it yet,
as I've been traveling since before its release). If anyone who has
F8 test 2 handy would mind checking on this bug and reporting results,
that would be great. If not, I may get one up in the next couple of
days.

Fwd: Graphical Shutdown
by Jonathan Roberts
I sent the below message to the Fedora-art-list and it was suggested I
ask here...
---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Jonathan Roberts <jonathan.roberts.uk(a)googlemail.com>
Date: 15 Sep 2007 12:25
Subject: Graphical Shutdown
To: "Discussions about the artwork included with Fedora, including
icons, themes, and wallpapers." <fedora-art-list(a)redhat.com>
Not sure if this is the relevant list, but...is there any possibility
of F8 having a graphical shutdown? Perhaps even just a non-verbose
shutdown mode? It's just my humble opinion, but I find it looks ugly
and breaks the experience a bit...
