[Fwd: FC8T2 fails to install when root on LV over software raid]
by Clyde E. Kunkel
Pardon this cross posting, but I am a bit confused now on the use of
Fedora Test lists for these issues. Saw another msg indicating that
this type of msg belonged on the development list. Anyway, help on
resolving this issue much appreciated.

BZ 298661
This is an ongoing issue that has been around for awhile. For whatever
reason, during an install of FC on my test system and one other
production system with promise raid controllers set to individual drives
and NOT raid, you have to use a NOMPATH parm for the installer to detect
all of the software raidsets. And this is then the only way the
installer sees all the raidsets that are PVs for the LVs.
Even then, the system will not switchroot since during initrd the
raidsets are not started causing the LVs to not be detected.
Would really like to get this fixed. Had to install FC7 on one of the
few raidsets that survived during install.
Interesting thing: FC5 installed nicely on an LV and have kept it
updated as a rawhide system (tho many current kernel initrds won't
switchroot).

Linking to libjava.so
by Orion Poplawski
I'm trying to package up a java package for octave that links to
libjava.so. Problem I'm having is that when octave tries to load the
module at run time it can't find libjava.so. How should this be remedied?
libjava.so is installed in:
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.7.0-icedtea-1.7.0.0/jre/lib/i386/libjava.so

I'm definitely in.

Some questions about Fedora
by Lucas Nussbaum
Hi,
I'm involved both in Debian and Ubuntu development, and I'm often
frustrated by how little I know about the other distributions. After
discussing this in a blog post[1], I got the impression that I wasn't
alone in that case.
So I decided to do something about that, and to go ask the other
distributions' developers a few questions. If this works well (answers
and interest from other distros), I might do that again, or turn this
into something more formal (for example, a mailing list and/or a wiki
would seem well suited for that).
I'll publish the answers on my blog[2], and, if this proves to raise
interest, move them to a wiki.
[1] http://www.lucas-nussbaum.net/blog/?p=250
[2] http://www.lucas-nussbaum.net/blog/
Here is a first set of questions. In your answers, please avoid codenames
(act as if the reader didn't know anything about your distribution).
Please try to write your answer as a short paragraph, answering all the
sub-questions from the questions at once.
Q1. Packages
How many "pieces of software" do you have in your distribution? Do you
distinguish between "source packages" and "binary packages"? (if yes,
give numbers for both). Are there subdivisions in the set of packages (by
kind of support, by "freeness")? Are all packages supported the same way,
or are there different levels of support? (If different levels, how many
packages are supported with each level?) Are some packages imported from
another distribution, or are most of your packages done from scratch by
your developers ?
Q2. Your developers
What's a "developer" in your distribution? How many developers do you
have? How many of these developers were active in 2007? Does a company
(which one?) employ a large number of developers? Do you have different
"classes" of developers, or does everybody have the same access right to
all your packages? How do you integrate new developers? How do you
handle contributors who don't have access rights to the archive? (is
there some kind of sponsoring system?)
Q3. Developers and packages ownership
What's the relationship between developers and packages? Does each
package have an assigned developer, or can everybody modify all packages
without stepping on anyone's toes? Are packages mostly maintained by
teams, or by developers working alone?
Other questions:
- Did I send that mail to the right mailing list?
- Which question should I have asked? What should I ask next?
- Do you think that this initiative is interesting?
- Do you think that this should move to a seperate mailing list? Would
you participate in such a mailing list?
- Can you suggest a project that could host such a mailing list without
annoying anyone? :)
- Any other suggestions?
Thank you for reading me so far -- and for answering my questions if you
did. ;) If you want me to ping you when I'll publish the answers, just
drop me a mail.

xulrunner(-devel) file provides (.pc and .so files)
by Martin Sourada
Hi,
As was already noted in this list, current xulrunner-devel package miss
some of the *.pc files firefox-devel package had. I played with it a
little about a week ago and it seems that slight modification of the
analogical files from firefox-devel package might solve the issue,
unless the stuff that is being linked through this is broken, in which
case it would help discover bugs, when apps building against it fails.
Any thoughts?
Another issue is rather a request. Could you symlink the xulrunner
shared libraries into the /usr/lib folder and run ldconfig there? It
would ease a lot the maintenance of packages that are built against it
(which currently needs rebuild every time the xulrunner/firefox version
changes, in vast majority of cases only because it changes location...).
The files I have in mind are libmozjs.so, libsqlite3.so libxpcom.so and
libxul.so. Comments?
Thanks,
Martin

Proposed changes to F8 Freeze Process
by Warren Togami
September 20th, 2007 Fedora Engineering Steering Committee ratified
these changes to the final F8 freeze process.
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/8/Schedule
1) CHANGE: At F8 Development freeze currently scheduled for October 4th,
the tree will be unlocked for new builds to be automatically tagged into
dist-f8. We will be treating this as an "honor system" freeze, where
participants are expected to commit only bug fixes and NOT threaten the
release with new features or risky changes.
The purpose of this new "freeze" policy is an experiment to smoothen the
process of getting last-minute fixes in F8 without creating a large
workload on rel-eng. This should reduce confusion of built but not
tagged packages like during past freezes. HOWEVER, peer policing of
proper adherence to freeze guidelines is essential.
We will be advertising loudly expectations of package maintainers of
acceptable changes during the freeze period.
2) REMINDER: If you screw up and add something to F8 that shouldn't be
(horribly broken new version, ABI change, so-name bump, new features,
etc.) we will NOT roll-back your build if it has already hit a daily
rawhide push. Your only option to recover from this mistake will be to
increase the version number or Epoch.
3) CHANGE: Prior to Final Freeze (October 17th) devel/ CVS branch will
build into dist-f8. Some package maintainers will want to begin
building packages with risky changes (ABI, new features, etc.) in
preparation for F9. At their option they may request per-package CVS
branch to F-8/ so they may do so without risking F-8 stability. Then
devel/ can be used to target dist-f9.
4) CHANGE: Due to the definition of "Development freeze" changing, we
are moving up the Final freeze date a week to October 17th. At this
point builds will no longer be automatically tagged dist-f8 and will
require rel-eng approval to be included in the F8 release. All
remaining devel/ will be branched to F-8/, and devel/ will target builds
to dist-f9.
