DKMS and old kernel modules
by Michel Salim
Hi,
I'm wondering how the version of DKMS in rawhide deals with old
modules, when the kernel for which they were built is removed.
On F-7, with FreshRPMS' madwifi RPM (which uses DKMS), the old modules
are left behind, which means /lib/modules accumulates junk files over
time.
Not sure what the best solution is. Trigger a cleanup process in the
DKMS initscript, which would operate if the kernel booted is not the
same as at the previous boot?
(will Bugzilla this if people think it's a good idea)
Regards,

SCALE 6x Gears Up
by Gareth J. Greenaway
The Sixth Annual SoCal Linux Expo will be February 8th-10th, 2008. It
will again be at the Westin LAX. SCALE has reserved more of the hotel
resources for SCALE 6X which will help address some of the seminar
crowding issues that arose during S5X (success is a nice problem to have).
Over the last two SCALEs, the Expo has expanded to included specialized
conferences on the Friday prior to SCALE. The Expo will “expand upon the
expansion” for SCALE 6x: the Women in Open Source conference will return
for its second year; the health care conference, now knows as DOHCS –
Demonstrating Open Source Health Care Systems, returns for a second
time. Last year DOHCS was a single track. For SCALE 6X, DOHCS splits
into two tracks, a technical track and a business track.
And newly added for SCALE 6X is a Friday conference on education: “Open
Source in Education” which focuses on opportunities for Open Source in
the field of education .
If you have any experience in any of the above-mentioned areas, please
consider sharing it with the Open Source community at SCALE: the calls
for papers for SCALE and for the Friday conferences can be found here:
http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale6x/conference-info/calls-for-papers/
<http://www.socallinuxexpo.com/scale6x/conference-info/calls-for-papers/>
All of the calls are now open for submittals. For SCALE 4X and 5X the
speaker slots filled rapidly; we anticipate the same for SCALE 6X. So if
you're considering speaking, don't delay submitting your proposal.
Submittal info for each conference can be found on their respective CFP
pages.
If your organization is considering a booth on the SCALE Expo floor, be
advised that we no more booths than last year, and last year they went
quickly. If you want to ensure that you have a booth reserved, apply for
one NOW. If you're a non-profit group, complete the application form at
http://www.socallinuxexpo.org/scale6x/documents/scale6x_dotORG_applicatio...
and send it to gareth(a)socallinuxexpo.org
The second SCALE IRC chat will be September 16th , at 7:00 pm PST. It
will be held in the #scale-chat channel of OFTC (irc.oftc.net). If you
have questions or comments about SCALE, feel free to join us.
SCALE 6X looks to be even better than S5X; mark your calendar – be in
Los Angeles February 8th-10th , 2008!

Enhancement proposal for Firefox
by Adalbert Prokop
Hello!
I'd like to propose an enhancement for the Firefox's start script. It
includes two changes:
1. Give the user the choice which version of Firefox is started,
especially on 64-bit architectures.
2. Use alsa-oss to allow Firefox (or its plugins) play sound. AFAIK they
use OSS now, which will fail in most cases, because /dev/dsp is almost
constantly in use by arts/esd/whatever.
Motivation
==========
I lately installed F7 on an AMD64 machine and had some problems with
firefox plugins, because most of them don't exist for 64 bit
architectures. I decided to use the 32 bit version, but it's not easy to
achieve it, because /usr/bin/firefox alwas uses the output of uname -m to
choose the version.
And alsa-oss simply because I was sorry either to have a soundless browser
or to change scripts.
How to do it
============
I have attached a patch, which will do what I suggested. It uses two
environment variables: MOZ_ARCH and MOZ_AOSS.
If MOZ_ARCH is set, it's value is used to determine the firefox version,
if it's not set, uname -m is called like before.
Simmilarly MOZ_AOSS could contain the path to the aoss application. If not
set, it would default to /usr/bin/aoss. If set to "none", alsa-oss would
be ommited completely.
Both variables could be set in /etc/profile.d to provide system wide
settings.
What do you think about these enhancements?

Is PKG_CONFIG_PATH set on the buildsystem?
by Jonathan Underwood
Hi,
I was just trying to update package of mine, and the main change is
adding the following macros to the spec file:
%define emacs_version %(pkg-config emacs --modversion)
%define emacs_lispdir %(pkg-config emacs --variable sitepkglispdir)
%define emacs_startdir %(pkg-coonfig emacs --variable sitestartdir)
in order to determine those things at package build time (as discussed
previously on fedora-packaging). However, on attempting to check the
changes in, I get this:
cvs diff: [12:11:28] obtained lock in /cvs/extras/rpms/emacs-vm/devel
Package emacs was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `emacs.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable

Is it therefore not possible to call pkg-config from within a spec

Cheers,
