gdm: gnome-keyring problem
by Yonas Abraham
Hi,
I am having this weird problem.
on login via gdm on an up2dated rawhide syetem, i get a back screen
with just the corser visible. if I login to that system via ssh from a
diffrent PC on the network and look at the /var/log/message, I see
Jan 11 21:12:04 siempc gdm-simple-slave[3077]: DEBUG: Writing wtmp
session record to /var/log/wtmp
Jan 11 21:12:04 siempc gdm-simple-slave[3077]: DEBUG: Adding new utmp record

if i hit Alt+Ctrl+Backspace, the server die and I get no signal on
the monitor. I can't even go to Alt+F1 . On the log file, I see:
Jan 11 21:53:24 siempc gdm-simple-slave[3077]: DEBUG: GdmServer: child

the only way i can get any signal is, to do:
telinit 3
telinit 5
most of the time this brings signal to the monitor.
any idea?

use defoma in fedora?
by Patrice Dumas
Hello,
I am currently looking at package that uses Type1 fonts through t1lib
(grace, xglyph, xdvi). In fedora there is no system that I know of that
can be used to make sure that all the type1 fonts are available for
those applications. Discussing this with a debian maintainer he told me
about defoma, a debian package which is used to register fonts and
provide fonts for all the applications, for fonts not handled by
fontconfig or applications not using fontconfig. Would it be a good idea
to try to have something similar in fedora or is it a wrong direction?

Fedora too cutting edge?
by Hans de Goede
Hi All,
One of the few reasons why Fedora is my distro of choice is because its usually
cutting edge, and I like to be where the development is happening.
However today I've had an encounter with Fedora which make me wonder if
sometimes we aren't a little too cutting edge. I tried to get an industrial
firewire camera to work with the stock Fedora kernel using the juju stack. Long
story short, it didn't work.
Which after reading: http://wiki.linux1394.org/JujuMigration Isn't really
surprising, quoting that page: "Almost no support for IIDC cameras: Not
compatible with libdc1394 v1. Highly experimental support in libdc1394 v2 which
works with some luck on only a few OHCI 1.1 controllers. Improvements are to be
expected in Linux 2.6.25-rc1."
Notice how a preliminary fix is expected for 2.6.25, which probably means that
this will still be broken in Fedora 9, notice that the breakage was introduced
in Fedora 7, so thats 18 months worth of broken firewire camera support (iow
most digital video cameras). Add to that that the above referenced wiki page
also says: "Regarding Linux 2.6.22 and 2.6.23, the best advice to Linux
distributors (kernel packagers) ... is: Build only the old IEEE 1394 drivers."
Does this mean that Fedora should not have shipped the new stack? No it
doesn't! Getting code out there early into many hands for testing is a good thing.
What IMHO we should have done is build both the new and the oldstack, which is
possible on the kernel side, and modify our patches to userspace to support the
juju stack, so that the userspace libs can work with either one. On top of this
we should then have written a small gui utility for easy switching.
---
Another example of Fedora being to cutting edge is pulseaudio, for prove click
this URL:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/buglist.cgi?product=Fedora&version=&component...
Again I think its good to be shipping this, and even that its good having it on
by default, but we should also provide a small gui utility for easily turning
ir off.
---
Considering the current state of affairs with regards to both features, I would
even like to advocate to make them both optional for Fedora 9.
Regards,
Hans
p.s.
I'll also be posting this to my blog for some wider exposure.

IIDC camera's and the juju firewirestack
by Hans de Goede
Hi All,
In the thread I started about Fedora perhaps being to cutting edge, it was said
that I shouldn't complain as there is only one problem left with the juju stack
which is a bug with via vt6306 cards in OHCI 1.0 cards.
Further analysis of the problem has learned that this is not true, I'm using a
via vt6306 card in OHCI 1.1 mode, which allegedly should work fine.
However most documents talk about using the juju stack with either harddisks or
DV for homevideo camera's. However I'm trying to use an industrial cam which
used the IIDC protocol, and support in the new juju stack (kernel + userspace)
for the IIDC protocol isn't very good.
As the consensus from the other thread seems to be that having 2 parallel
stacks is not a good plan, I have decided to spend some time to get the IIDC
situation with the juju stack improved. However I'm pretty new to all this, so
I will need a couple of pointers to get me up to speed.
I've been testing with the grab_gray_image example from libdc1394-2.0.0. The
problem is that it hangs at the dc1394_capture_dequeue(camera,
DC1394_CAPTURE_POLICY_WAIT, &frame) call.
The camera does seem to be sending data, as its activity led is flickering.
Any clues for further debugging this would be much appreciated, shall I put
this in bugzilla? If so against which component?
Regards,
Hans
p.s.
Yes I know that libdc1394 currently is not in Fedora, but that can be changed,
it has some pieces of patented code, but those can be disabled using a
./configure option -> are #ifdef'd and can thus be removed automatically from
the source code using some special tools.

That's what I was thinking/hoping, but...

...I still can't get more than 1 or 2 frames of dv w/the OHCI 1.0 VT6307 I'm
working with right now. :(

I'm rather short on ideas too. I was really hoping the dynamic buffer
allocation patch might help too, thinking maybe these cards were just
exhausting the buffer and getting wedged, but no dice.
Oh, I should also mention that I get some lockdep spew w/the dynamic buffer
alloc patch added to the mix... (will get that report over to you via
linux1394-devel though)

autoconf issue using -stdc=gnu++0x option in AC_CHECK_HEADER macro.
by Jochen Schmitt
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Hello,
I have a special question about the AC_HEADER macro in autoconf. I'm
trying to text for
the existence of the unordered_set header file in C++. Unfortunately,
I will got a message,
that I have to use the -std=gnu++0x if I want to include this header file.
So I want to ask, what I have to to, that autoconf will respect this
option in the
AC_HEADER macro.

Regarding FUDCon's Friday Hackfest
by Max Spevack
This is kind of amusing.... so the Friday hackfests for FUDCon are at
the "State Club" which is on NCSU's campus. It's a really nice building
with meeting rooms, a very nice lunch that you will partake in, etc.
You'll love it, really.
Turns out though, that there is a "no jeans, no shorts" dress code. So
for all of you hackers -- bring a pair of khakis with you. If you
wanted to wear a polo shirt, that would really knock their socks off.
:)
The actual Saturday FUDCon and Sunday hackfests -- clothing required,
but that is all.
Thanks,
Max

Getting a SIS900 chipset to work
by Paul F. Johnson
Hi,
I've just moved from FC6 to rawhide on the laptop and while most things
are OK, the xorg-x11 stuff for the SIS900 chipset seems to be broken.
I've looked on the lists and this was reported around the end of last
year with the advice to change the config to use the vesa driver.
While this works, it's making the laptop run dog slow.
Any ideas when it'll be up and running again?
