b/c it sure feels like the latter is more common.

Out of convenience, the former will be more common.
Out of convenience of what? You'd have to know:
1. the repo is on
repos.fedorapeople.org
2. that the username is 'spot'
3. that the reponame is 'chromium'
and then you'd have to type all of it
instead of just pasting from your webbrowser directly from the website.
