Then again, one that does not have all these to worry about, would

fine having X start before network and LDAP.
And this is the point, one should not pay for something they don't use.
We have two alternatives to get that:
1. Have the init be flexible enough so that it can easily start X before
the network if at all possible.
2. Have an API so that software can wait for things. This way you can
start X, and if it reaches some code that needs networking (for XDMCP
for example), it can just say "wait for networking to be up".
