I think the idea of some kind of separate fonts repository, with the
addition of
a browser (with sample images, perhaps even preview of a phrase
entered by the user) would be extremely useful
You're not describing a separate fonts repository you're describing
the Open Font Library web site.
http://www.openfontlibrary.org/
And the existence of such a site is totally orthogonal to the
distribution or not of its contents via Fedora packages, as we've seen
for years for CPAN (and such a site will never be the only source for
something, as seen again with CPAN).
- I've just been looking for fonts, and the
list provided by yum doesn't exactly make it easy to tell whether a
particular
font package would be useful for my needs.
This is of course not specific to fonts, or content, we have lots of
packaged stuff you can only really understand by browsing the upstream
web site.
For fonts this bit has been identified:
http://bugzilla.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18928
Volunteers to work on it would be welcome. I'll probably post some
requirements on the fonts list in the next days if people are
interested.
[ i.e. yes, I *am* grateful for your packaging work, and I am not
for
a moment
suggesting it doesn't "belong in Fedora" ... ]
Thanks!
