Check out these two bugs. You might be hitting this where it is
trying to use the built-in card instead of your addon PCI card by
default, perhaps only for some applications:

I'll follow up on those reports and attempt to add useful information.
I have since previous OS (FC7) disabled the onboard sound card at the
BIOS level.
