Another possibility, is to install them into /usr/share/X11/fonts,

Either will work and I can live with either. However, I lean toward having
ALL fonts under /usr/share/fonts and, thus, /usr/share/fonts/X11 is my
preference.
Now to just get every other font packager to put their fonts
under /usr/share/fonts ;)
