For FUDCon 2009 Toronto, we contracted a bus to shuttle people from the Westford, MA Red Hat office to the event, and back. The cost ended up more reasonable than flying so many people to Toronto. It also wasn't a terribly longer process once you factor in airports and other mass transit.
This year Flock is an even shorter distance away (6 hours vs. 8-9). So a bus might again be reasonable, if the number of people attending warrants it. There are also different size buses. I think we had a large 50+ seater, but I believe there are smaller and cheaper ones available.
Is there any idea yet how many people from Westford are attending Flock 2015?
The logical thing might be to wait a few weeks and check the registration list.

Maybe we could ask about this specifically? It looks like I will be in Indiana just before, and then traveling to LinuxCon in Seattle after, so even though I'd normally be near Westford I wouldn't get to join the fun.
There are "only" 36 responses. If we want to do that, maybe Luke could add a question to reg?

Oh wow. I didn't even notice that registration was open. Yes, new WP theme. Let's blame that. :)

I asked Luke if he could add a question to find out if a registrant is located in/near Westford, MA.

So as of this moment, there are 17 pre-registered attendees who have indicated that they are in/near Westford. We should figure out if a bus is sensible at that number (assuming as many as 24 riders might be wise, as some folks may not yet have decided whether they are coming). Doing a quick search of local charter bus companies[1], we could probably rent a minibus (30 seats) for about $1250 each way ($3.25/mi for 385 miles, based on Google maps[2]). Alternately, they have a larger (56-seat) bus for $3.75/mi and a couple of "luxury" buses whose price is not listed on their website. Obviously, other bus companies likely exist, but this is hopefully useful information for starting an investigation. From my back of the envelope scribbling, that seems like a much better
deal than paying for gas (I'm not even considering mileage rate itself), much less flights.
Local Motion of Boston is the company we used for the FUDBus to FUDCon Toronto 2009[1], FWIW. Although the bus ended up not being wifi/power equipped, this was due to timing. Looks like things changed in the last several years:

I would be surprised if most buses now weren't comparably equipped.

Is someone in OSAS getting quotes for a bus already? It's going to make a big difference for folks who are planning expenditures for travel.
I have not. It would be really helpful if the folks who want to bus could self-organize that.
