what am I missing, getting SMTP to work
by Mike Rambour
I am configuring a new machine and I can't get it to work. I am using
Core1, all the patches and Postfix. I am trying to use my Linux box as a
outgoing mail server from home and not use my ISP's SMTP, I can send mail
from the Linux machine but not from my home machines (another Linux for me
and Windows for my wife and daughter).
the output of nmap is (From work to home not the same net) says smtp is
Closed but I cant figure out why:
PORT STATE SERVICE
21/tcp open ftp
22/tcp open ssh
25/tcp closed smtp
80/tcp open http
my iptables looks like this
ACCEPT all -- anywhere anywhere state
RELATED,ESTABLISHED
ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere state NEW tcp
dpt:smtp
ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere state NEW tcp
dpt:http
ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere state NEW tcp
dpt:ftp
ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere anywhere state NEW tcp
dpt:ssh
REJECT all -- anywhere anywhere reject-with
icmp-host-prohibi
I am using postfix and ps output says
root 1735 0.0 0.4 7140 620 ? S Apr14 0:00 sendmail:
accepting connections
smmsp 1744 0.0 0.3 7316 412 ? S Apr14 0:00 sendmail:
Queue runner@01:00:00 for /var/spool/clientmqueue
I am guessing my problem is smtp being closed according to nmap. I did
not install telnetd. On the linux machine, I can do telnet localhost 25
and get into mail but I can not do telnet external_ip 25 gives me a
connection refused as well as from the Windows machines.
Those of you who are regulars on this list know I am a newbie but I have
looked everywhere I can think of and even purchased "Postfix, the
definitive guide" with no luck.
This is the killer for me, I even did "service iptables stop" and it
still did not work with the firewall turned off. I am not sure where to
look now. At my work machine as was suggested by someone here on this
list, I installed shorewall and I was going to do that here at home but
since iptables stop didnt help, I dont think shorewall would help either.
My configuration by the way is that the linux box is behind a Linksys
router so the machine has a 192.168.1.30 address and is on my network. I
have tried removing the Linksys and putting the Linux box directly on the
net and on the linksys with the Linux IP in the DMZ and also just
forwarding the ports...all 3 configurations gave the same result, port 25
closed.

SATA on Linux vs. WinXP WAS Help me to get rid of windows forever

I found a page on Intel's site that said that newer kernels support SATA
on the ICH5 chipset, but only in legacy mode:
http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/cs-006312-prd40.htm
Whereas MSI (the manufacturer of the motherboard I've got on order) states
that WinXP can do SATA in Native mode.
1) Is there any advantage to running in Native mode? (IOW, is it worth it
to purchase WinXP?)
2) Does anybody know if Native mode support is coming to linux?

howto mirror fedora.redhat.com/fedora/linux/core with rsync
by skennedy@tpno.org
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
So I'm trying to setup my own yum repository. At first, I used
mirrors.kernel.org, but when i went to update my system, it complained
about missing packages. So I checked, and sure enough, an updated
version of openoffice was missing on their site.
Slightly annoyed, I went digging for another site. Found one, did the
mirror thing, not even thinking they'd be missing the same thing ( my
fault, I know ). Sure enough, they were missing the updated
openoffice file ( wish I had it handy, which one was missing ).
So, went to fedora.redhat.com/fedora/linux/core/... and sure enough,
it has the updated package. So, I want to mirror directly from
redhat, but I don't see instructions for how to do it ( namely, what
the server name is that I can rsync from ).
Can anybody help me out here?

Killing a process that won't die
by John Nichel
Hi,
I'm trying to kill a process on my box, but when I try 'kill xxxx',
it doesn't go away. Is there another way to get rid of it, short of
restarting the box?

fedora teething problems
by Henry Widd
Hi, recently got fedora on my pc - very good. Well
done whoever makes it!
Few probs to solve though...if anyone knows the answer
pls help me...
1. I get my ip address dynamically, so my /etc/hosts
file is empty - but fedora complains about this on
start up. What should go in there...? just my
hostname? hostname and any old address?
2. The bottom of a Mozilla browser is covered by the
start bar. How can I make it open so it fits within
the window space? (It is impossible to size it down by
hand because you can't get hold of the bottom of it).
3. And if you are still reading...the auto-update ia
great for fedora packages etc, but what abput
something like Ogle dvd player. As yet, I have had to
search for the rpm, then look for its dependencies...
and so on. Surely this is not the way to do it? surely
it can be done automatically?
Thanks for any help,
Henry

Website information
by Jonathan Gratus
Dear Fedora
I have two questions that I belive should be made clearer in the web
site. (The answers may be there but I haven't found them.)
First: I'm presently running redhat 9.0. Is there an easy upgrade to
Fedora Core 1.0 and will there be one to Fedora Core 2.0?
Second: What is the policy regarding the test verses the proper releases
of Fedora Core.
For example: with regard to stability, security, upgradablity from
passed releases, upgradablity to future releases. Is the general
philosophy that the Test releases should only be used as for playing but
if you have a computer you acutually uses on a daily basis you should
wait for a full release?
Thanks

Network card problems - setting duplex etc.
by Jim Radford
Hi All,
I've got ADSL with Demon, and have a 4 port router (supplied by BT, I have no
access to it) that I use for my net connection (I think it's just a hub).
However, I've just reasiled I'm only getting about 40k between boxes plugged
into it. Connections to the internet are fine (as I'd expect for a 2Mb ADSL),
it's just transfering files between machines.
I'm trying to work out if it's my setup that's the problem - or the BT router
thing.
lspci gives:
00:0d.0 Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c905B 100BaseTX [Cyclone] (rev
30)
lsmod gives:
3c59x 29872 1
mii-tool eth0 gives:
eth0: 10 Mbit, half duplex, no link
ethtool eth0 gives:
Settings for eth0:
No data available
mii-diag eth0 gives:
Basic registers of MII PHY #0: 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000.
Basic mode control register 0x0000: Auto-negotiation disabled, with
Speed fixed at 10 mbps, half-duplex.
Basic mode status register 0x0000 ... 0000.
Link status: not established.
Link partner information is not exchanged when in fixed speed mode.
End of basic transceiver information.
uname gives:
Linux 2.4.22-1.2179.nptl #1 Tue Apr 13 10:14:30 EDT 2004 i686 athlon i386
I've tried to nail the card at 10Mb HD, because autonegotiation wasn't working
(so I switched it off), I thought it would cure my problem - but it hasn't.
The fact that I can't get any details from ethtool worries me a little.
My 2nd machine on the network is my Laptop that I take too and from work - I
know the network card in that machine is fine because autonegotiation works
when I'm in the office.
mii-tool eth0 gives:
eth0: autonegotiation failed, link ok
mii-diag eth0 gives:
Basic registers of MII PHY #32: 1000 782d 0000 0000 01e1 0000 0000
0000.
Basic mode control register 0x1000: Auto-negotiation enabled.
You have link beat, and everything is working OK.
Your link partner does not do autonegotiation, and this transceiver
type
does not report the sensed link speed.
End of basic transceiver information.
ethtool eth0 gives:
Settings for eth0:
Supported ports: [ TP MII ]
Supported link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
Supports auto-negotiation: Yes
Advertised link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes
Speed: 10Mb/s
Duplex: Half
Port: MII
PHYAD: 32
Transceiver: internal
Auto-negotiation: on
Supports Wake-on: pumbg
Wake-on: d
Current message level: 0xffffffff (-1)
Link detected: yes
Any ideas? Any more information I can provide? Anything in the logs I could
look for?
I'm thinking it's either the setup of my main machine - or something on the
router (which means I can shout at BT :)
Thanks in advance.
