Problems starting X [FC2]
by Fred Nastos
Hi,
I am trying to get Fedora Core 2 working on the following system:
cpu: P4-2.8E
mb: ASUS P4S800D-E DLX S478 SIS655TX DDR
ram: DDR 2x512 MB
video: ATI RADEON 7000 64M AGP
This will be a linux-only computer. Sorry for the long-winded
description below, but I am trying to give as much detail as
possible.
The installation procedure went fine (though I have searched the
web and found that many have had trouble with the installation
on the ASUS 800-series mboards). But when I went for my first
reboot, the computer seemed to crash as soon as the boot
sequence started, that is immediately after the "Press 'I' to enter
interactive setup" message the screen went blank and the computer
froze (ctrl-alt-backspace did nothing).
I got rid of the graphical boot loader by dropping "rhgb quiet" from
the grub boot paramaters and the boot sequence went well until
it came time to load X, at which point the computer crashed again.
A message flashed onto the screen before the screen went blank
but it was impossible to read. I then logged into single mode by
appending "single" to the boot parameters, and managed to get a
terminal. Looking through the file Xorg.0.log I found the error message:
Could not init font path element unix/:7100, removing from list!
Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'
I searched the web a little, and found that this had to do with the
xfs service not running. During the full boot up seqeunce, with
the deafult parameters passed to the kernel, it says
Starting xfs: [OK]
so maybe it is getting killed/stopped somehow? Anyway, when
I load up in single mode, xfs isn't started by default, so I started
it with
/etc/init.d/xfs start
And then I tried to run startx, which wouldn't because xauth
wasn't in my path. I guess root isn't supposed to start X?
After I put the /usr/X11R6/bin directory in my path and ran
startx, the system crashed again. I could not find a log file
though.
I repeated everything above, and decided to run Xorg
instead of startx. This generated a log file, but the log
file was not very useful. It is ery short, and ends with
(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such device)
(II) Module ABI versions:
X.Org ANSI C Emulation: 0.2
X.Org Video Driver: 0.7
X.Org XInput driver : 0.4
X.Org Server Extension : 0.2
X.Org Font Renderer : 0.4
(II) Loader running on linux
(II) LoadModule: "bitmap"
And that's all there is in it. I'm stuck. Any help would be
much appreciated.
Thanks.

[FC2] When try to install a Logitech Quickam Pro 4000, I can't get anymore sound...
by Coume - Lubox.com
Hello,
I don't know if one one you managed to get a Logitech Quickam Pro 4000
working under FC2, but I personally can't...
I followed the steps given by the pwc driver, and then rebooted the
computer. As this time, kudzu recognized the cam, and ask me 5times in
the rows if I wanted to configure it... Once I access the windows
manage, KDE in my case, the sound server is not accessible anymore.
I have to unplug the cam, reboot and unconfigure the cam to get sounds
again :(
It's a brand new camera, but it is reported to work very well under
linux. then I don't know if it's me who is doing something wrong or if
there is an issue which this cam + FC2 + alsa.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Regards,
Ludo

Run fsck from the boot prompt
by Mark Haney
is there a way to run a fsck from the boot prompt? I have a machine here
that is pretty well FUBAR, I can't even get it to a CLI to run fsck. Any
ideas?

xcdroast/cdrecord in FC2
by browning2man
Hi all,
I have some suggestion for those needing help with xcdroast/cdrecord
with the new 2.6 kernel in FC2. I use a Liteon LTR-52246s running FC2.
This was my approach and so far it works for me:
First, I went to /etc and renamed the xcdroast.conf file to a backup
file. Next, log in Gnome or KDE as root and call up xcdroast and start
initial configuration all over again (this generates a new xcdroast.conf
file). Instead scanning for the cd drive, I manually added /dev/hdc and
per the release notes for FC2. Now, I don't receive the error message
from xcdroast about improper scsi configuration. Then, I edited the
/etc/cdrecord.conf and changed FIFO size from 1m to 8m. I tested again
and recorded the first 3 FC2 .iso images perfectly then checked with
md5sum.
After you burn a CD, unmount the CD and do this to check file integrity:
dd if=/dev/cdrom bs=2k | md5sum. This is the same command line that is
embedded on the 1st cd when you boot up off the 1st cd to install and it
ask you if you want to do a media check.

Bingo.
Thanks, that will do it.
I remember having an old hex calculator, but thinking back, bc is
the way I did it.
Which is good, since I dont use gnome (which has been suggested)
Thanks again.

So, take two aspirin, and try again in 6mo.
SATA support is NEW in Linux, and evolving quickly.
If you have Bleading-edge hardware (SATA) you've got to expect to have
problems with Linux. Be happily suprised, like I was, when there actually
is early support.

Music Player question
by Shaun T. Erickson
It claims to be able to play streaming Internet radio stations. There's
more than one kind, right? Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, and so on,
yes? How do I 1) know what type it will play, and 2) find stations of
that type, to play?
Hmm. I discovered the radio play list in /usr/share/rythmbox, but when I
try to play anything in that list, I get this:
There is no element present to handle the stream's mime type audio/mpeg.

Is it possible to 'sleep' while using ACPI?
by Brian Kendig
When I use ACPI on my laptop under FC2, it won't ever go to sleep. I
have the Battery Charge Monitor in my dock, but when I right-click on
it and select 'Suspend Computer' it says "The Suspend command
'/usr/bin/apm -s' was unsuccessful." If I run 'apmsleep +0:01' from a
command line, it tells me that I have to recompile my kernel with APM
support.
I'm using a kernel with APM and ACPI both compiled into it. It seems
that if ACPI is loaded, APM won't work at all. If I go into Server
Settings and turn off the acpid service, then APM will work and the
laptop will be able to go to sleep, but I lose other functionality (the
laptop has two batteries but APM only sees them as a single combined
battery so I can't see the individual charge of each), and when I
reboot I get an error saying "can't access ACPI events in
/var/run/acpid.socket, make sure the ACPI subsystem is working and the
acpid daemon is running."
Is there any way to make a laptop go to sleep while it's under ACPI
management?

FC2: Cannot print from Mozilla to PCL5e printer
by George Garvey
The failing command is gs, with the message:
DEBUG: no psname was provided.
GNU Ghostscript 7.07: Unrecoverable error, exit code 1
The printer has a really old postscript interpreter that can't handle the
file directly. I can't find a resolution. It appears to be a problem with
fonts, but I don't know what the solution might be.
I've attached the cups debug output if that is useful.
