Random total lockups
by Rob Brown-Bayliss
Since I installed FC2 my machine has been randomly locking up, I suspect
it's X related as it seems to happen when I am clicking on a button
etc... But cant be 100% sure.
Has this been happening to any one else? I have updated X and changed
to the nvidia drivers, but still it is happening. so maybe not X. I
have upgraded to the 2.6.6 kernel as well, but still I get total system
lockups.

FC1 Users: Sample yum.conf for Fedora Legacy Updates
by Clint Harshaw
Hi all:
I want to share my yum.conf with other FC1 users who will be migrating to
updates from Fedora Legacy. Credit is due to all of the people working with
Fedora Legacy along with Maxwell at fedorafaq.org, from whom the majority of
this yum.conf is derived.
I've tried to comment it liberally to help other users find the best fishing
holes (i.e. mirror repos) that are suitable for their own locale.
If there are any corrections or suggestions for improvement, please let us all
know.
Hope this helps,
Clint
# This is a yum.conf for Fedora Core 1 with updates from Fedora Legacy.
# I've tried to maintain a similar outline as Maxwell Kanat-Alexander's
# yum.conf found at his excellent and informative fedorafaq.org site.
#
# Note that I've included several U.S. mirrors that are close to *me*. This
means
# that you will want to have a look at this list of mirrors to
# similarly configure mirrors that are geographically close to you.
#
# http://www.fedoralegacy.org/download/fedoralegacy-mirrors.php
#
# I've left many of the "alternate repositories" commented out, as well
# as those repositories for "unstable" or "testing" files.
#
# To import Fedora Legacy's GPG signature do this as root:
# rpm --import http://www.fedoralegacy.org/FEDORA-LEGACY-GPG-KEY
#
# If you don't want to check the signatures, then comment out those lines
# that are gpgcheck=1
#
# The Mozilla SeaMonkey repo is added for those who want to update Mozilla.

More on Masquerading
by Harry Putnam
One of these *mc files cures my bounce problem. The one with the
Masquerading stuff in it.
>From another thread I've learned that masquerading doesn't work as I
thought it did but for years now I've been masquerading what ever
machines I have at home as `newsguy.com'. I thought I'd learned a way
of using the `genericstable' to do something similar and not need to
masquerade.
My assumption was that the `Smart_host' at the other end of my
sendmails outgoing activity required a resolvable host as source IP to
avoid bouncing. I thought by setting some genericstable vars I could
make it appear to be a resolvable host name.
It is not an internet FQDN, just my own made up domain for my local
lan. Therefore will never be resovable by dns lookups.
My attempt at using generics tables consisted of adding:
(see sendmail2.mc below for the full settings)
FEATURE(`genericstable')dnl
FEATURE(`generics_entire_domain')dnl
And to /etc/mail/genericstable:
reader reader(a)newsguy.com
Building the hash and restarting sendmail.
With that in place I get these kind of errors:
(wrapped for mail). They happen too quickly to be coming from the
smart_host so its my sendmail process rejecting it.

latest cdrecord problem status
by Jude DaShiell
/proc/cmdline did not have hdd=ide-scsi in it so I updated /etc/grub.conf
with that parameter and now cdrecord -scanbus finds and correctly
identifies the burner. I'm about to make a copy of Fedora Core 2 for a
local charity that refurbishes old computers.

emacs encoding vs FC2
by Ian Malone
(I've spent a while googling this, and searched the list archives,
because I was sure it would have happened to someone already.
I get the feeling the answer is some incredibly obvious setting.
My reasoning for posting to fedora-list rather than the Emacs
mailing list is that the following seem like integration issues,
but ICBW.)
$ echo $LANG
en_GB.UTF-8
I'm having two (connected?) problems with unicode characters and
(GNU) Emacs. The first is loading emacs to visit a file:
$emacs Kölsch&
In gnome-terminal (or xterm) will visit the file 'Kölsch',
regardless of whether 'Kölsch' exists, or whether I'm on an ext3 fs
or my -o utf8 mounted vfat fs. Once running emacs I have no
difficulty opening/creating the file from C-x C-f, and it shows up
correctly in emacs directory listing. 'ö' could result from
interpreting utf-8 encoded 'ö' as ISO-8859-1, I've also checked
with one other character (ü I think) that the incorrect name is a
latin-1 interpretation. I've tried to find some emacs setting for
the encoding of command line arguments but haven't spotted it yet.
The second problem is pasting from other applications, notably the
gucharmap. Here most Latin characters seem to work alright,
but accented Greek characters like alpha-tonos (U+03AC) do not.
In Emacs I end up with an escaped sequence which displays as
'^[%Gά^[%@', but works properly if re-pasted into Ximian or
OpenOffice. I've tried various settings X selection coding systems
in Emacs (C-x RET x), including utf-8 and utf-16 be and le. Again,
using the Greek keyboard layout via Gnome keyboard preferences, it's
possible to enter this character into Emacs. M-x ucs-insert also
works for any character I've tried.
This is using GNU Emacs, GNOME, FC2 and the United Kingdom and Greek
keyboard layouts. libgnome is 2.6.0-3. Any thoughts? Would the
above work on XEmacs, and would I have to get rid of GNU Emacs to
install it? (Add/remove applications isn't allowing me to select
XEmacs or de-select Emacs, and before I go to the command line I
wonder whether there's a rational explanation)

Anything better than ndiswrapper for Broadcom wireless card?
by Erik Hemdal
I fear this is an all-too-common question, but I want to verify if there's a better answer among the Fedora best.
I have a Dell TrueMobile 1450 MiniPCI card to configure for FC1. Inside, it's a Broadcom BCM94309 chipset, which Broadcom claims is their "reference implementation" for an 802.11a/b/c wireless interface. Broadcom doesn't sell it direct, so they don't provide any drivers (same deal for all their wireless devices).
I've found a reference on Google that suggests I'm stuck using ndiswrapper with the Windows driver, but it's an older reference to the BCM4301 chipset. Couldn't find any references on the Fedora archive nor the Red Hat 'broadcom-list' archive for my hardware.
Am I stuck with ndiswrapper, or are there better alternatives? Thanks for any help. Erik

NTP syncing
by Mike McMullen
Hi All,
I am trying to get ntp to sync with an ntp server without much luck on FC2.
I have the following servers defined in /etc/ntp.conf
server time.nist.gov prefer
server ns.arc.nasa.gov prefer
server tick.usno.navy.mil prefer
My FC2 system time is set within one minute of two other servers I have
using ntp; one RH7.3 and another FC1.
I've set the FC2 time by hand. When I start ntp I see the following
message in my /var/log/messages log.
Sep 19 22:12:29 www ntpd[3183]: ntpd 4.2.0(a)1.1161-r Thu Mar 11 11:46:39 EST 2004 (1)

Any insight appreciated!

X windows system freezed
by Christophe Lambert
Hi,
I am running the RedHat Fedora core 2 on an Athlon computer. The
computer ran without any problem since the Fedora core 2 release.
Since the following updates, the X windows system freezes after a random
amount of time.
Package Installed:
kernel 2.6.8-1.521.i686
Package Dependency Installed:
kdebase-devel 6:3.2.2-6.FC2.i386
kdelibs-devel 6:3.2.2-8.FC2.i386
samba-common 3.0.7-2.FC2.i386
samba-client 3.0.7-2.FC2.i386
Package Updated:
imlib 1:1.9.13-19.i386
lha 1.14i-14.1.i386
kdebase 6:3.2.2-6.FC2.i386
cdda2wav 8:2.01-0.a27.4.FC2.3.i386
cdrecord 8:2.01-0.a27.4.FC2.3.i386
mkisofs 8:2.01-0.a27.4.FC2.3.i386
kdelibs 6:3.2.2-8.FC2.i386
kudzu 1.1.68.2-1.i386
samba 3.0.7-2.FC2.i386
Characteristics:
- The X process is running at 99% of CPU.
- There is no related lines in log files
- It seems to be not dependent on the kernel (I tried under 2.6.7 and
2.6.8).
- It appears under Gnome as well as under KDE
- It seems independently related to applications I used (Evolution,
Emacs, Mozilla, Terminal or ... nothing)
- It seems to be not related to the screen saver: it does not matter if
it is activated or not.
The only thing I can do is to log in from another computer, kill the X process, go to telinit 3 and then telinit 5.
The problem happens about 10 times per day.
If somebody has any idea to solve/find the problem, he is welcome.
Thanks,
Christophe

by Tor Harald Thorland
Hi,
I'm trying to get my twinMOS mobile disk IV 512MB usb stick to work with
fedora 2. When I insert the stick the following window pops up:
Window heading: KWrited - listening on Device /dev/pts/0
And it has the following message:
Message from syslogd@dsl-69-134 at Mon Sep 27 11:48:08 2004 ...
dsl-69-134 kernel: Disabling IRQ #9
Then, my KEYBOARD stops working, and i need to reboot my computer
without the stick to get it back....
I'm running kernel 2.6.8-1.521
How can I get it to work, and what is the correct way to mount & unmount
it without loosing any work?
Thanx
