Fedora 10 and Fedora 11's 2.6.29 kernels vs VMWare WS 5.5

Hello there, is there any chance 2.6.29 kernels in Fedora 10 or 11 would be make the use of VMware Workstation 5.5 possible without patching/recompiling? This following post presents a tiny patch for 2.6.29 kernels so that VMWare 5.5 can be used (otherwise you have to use VMWare 6.x, meaning paying the upgrade price): http://www.insecure.ws/2009/04/21/vmware-specific-specific-55x-and-kernel... For the moment I'm stuck w/ F10's 2.6.27 kernel, but might consider upgrading to F11 if its latest kernel is OK for VMWare 5.5 or eventually recompile the kernel (in F10 or F11). Regards, -- wwp

reliable gigabit NICs for fedora?

I see just enough complaints about various gigabit network adapters in various versions of linux that I'm slightly leery of just buying whatever I can find and slapping it in the system :-). Anyone using gigabit (and actually using the bandwidth too :-) who can recommend some adapters that work well in fedora 11? I've got PCI as well as PCIE 1x slots available (PCI only in some systems though).

security updates causing firefox trouble?

after checking ok on security updates in my f10, I am experiencing trouble with firefox; cant seem to go to other sites, even tho i can still get new gmail. I also see intermittent jumps in firefox %cpu to 10-15% range I dont recall getting updates finished screen. It looks like the yum update process is stalled: [root@f10 ~]# ps ax |grep -i firef 3872 ? system-config-network "activate","deactivate" button greyed out

hi guys, i've installed fedora 10 on my laptop, there is a problem with the "activate" and "deactivate" button in the system-config-network 1.5.95, they are grey all the time. system-config-network worked fine on fedora 8, someone reported a bug https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=477879about this problem on fedora 9. is this still an unfixed bug on f10,or just because i misconfigured something? any idea will be appreriated, thanks in advance. -- Daniel Shi from CS.SCU

udev improvement?

AFAICT, udev will run all files in /etc/udev/rules.d. Does it require the files be called xxx.rules? man udev doesn't say so. BTW, where can I find the code that executes this function?

F10 install update repo

I just installed F10 for the first time on a server here. The installation went swimmingly, but the first time I ran 'yum update' I got this: Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=fedora-10&arch=i386 error was [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error (-2, 'Name or service not known')> Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. That's interesting, DESPITE my including all networking information during the installation, /etc/resolv.conf was empty. I'd file a bug but since it's not F11, I'm not going to bother.
