Problem with a display
by Doll, Margaret Ann
We have a Dell GX 280 to which we attached a Dell flat screen. I believe
the flat screen is an E2210.
The Dell is running one of the latest versions of Fedora 12,
2.6.32.11-99.fc12.i686.PAE.
I installed the latest version of Tecplot 360 on the system. We are getting
errors with this version of tecplot that we also experienced with an older
version of the tecplot.
When we plot a solid, surface graph, then go to "contour ...", if we click
on the ">>" arrows, our session dies.
The /var/log/messages record:
Dec 6 16:03:26 deuty abrt[20074]: can't read /proc/18937/exe link

This doesn't happen on other unix systems of ours. I gather there is
problem with the interface to the display that we are using. Any ideas how
to fix the problem?

how to patch a kernel using fedora-ksplice
by Ranjan Maitra
Hi,
I noticed that there is a new kernel out and I wanted to try patching
it using ksplice. I have fedora-ksplice installed, and was wondering
what I should do? I do use yum mostly for my installs and updates.
Thanks in advance!
Best wishes,

FC13 suspend hangs in 2.6.34.7-61.fc13.x86_64
by Tony Foster
HW - intel motherboard with E5300 CPU 4GB memory
35 Gb available on root disc
system suspend and hibernate worked fine in FC11
and works fine in FC13 with kernel 2.6.33.3-85.fc13.x86_64
However system hangs with kernel 2.6.34.7-61.fc13.x86_64 when
transitioning into suspend.
I scanned my email archive for any mention of this problem.
Has anyone else had a problem with 2.6.34.7-61.fc13.x86_64 and suspend.
Any advice on how to fix it?

Samsung Laser Printers - propietary Page Description Language? (ML-1665)
by Fernando Cassia
Hi there,
I´m thinking of replacing my ages-old HP LaserJet 1100 (PCL4, PCL5, 16
MB RAM) with a with a very affordable yet fast Samung (model ML-1665 -
product info at
http://ho.io/samsunglasers )
Samsung provides propietary, binary-only drivers for Linux at this location
http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/DR/201001/20100121132724343/Uni...
However, they only mention Ubuntu, no word about Fedora.
I´m not very happy to use binary-only drivers, because at some point
they might choose to discontinue them, or those binary drivers might
have dependencies that later cannot be fulfilled (say require an older
glibc version, older version of CUPS than present in future linux
version, etc etc).
Anyone has more detailed info on what Page Description Language do
these Samsung printers use?
I´m more saddened about the lack of understanding by consumers in
general over the use of OPEN STANDARDS. PCL and PostScript are open
standards -there are Free Software as well as propietary
implementations of each-, yet, all that normal users seems to care
about is that a given device "has Linux drivers". Well, propietary
Linux drivers with closed protocols and languages are not very good
either. The device will become a paperweight as soon as the
manufacturer decides to kill it by not issuing any more linux driver
updates.
So, any in-depth info about what page description language do these
Samsung ML-1665 printers use?. The Samsung web page is --of course--
of no help.
Here, the product description:

Re: VPN/IPSEC tunnel
by J.Witvliet@mindef.nl
Does not agree,
"People" claim that openvpn is supposedly easier to configure, compared with *swan.
However, for a _very_ simple tunnel that migth be true, but most of the problems people encounter with ipsec are often related to either certificates, CA's, routing, or smartcards. And they will encouter likewise problems (but other syntax) when using openvpn.
When confronted with more complex network setup (mesh topology), scalability, or ipv6 your best (or even only) option remains ipsec.
Interoperability with existing vpn products? Forget openvpn!
Even for very simple hapsnap tunnels one might even consider the tunnel capabilities of openssh.....

Nope. Openvpn uses it's own ssl based protocol. It cannot directly
interoperate with ipsec tunnels. ;)
That said, if you have control over both endpoints, IMHO openvpn is a
vastly better choice than ipsec.

Re: F14: can't get java running
by Tony Camuso
Miranda,
Thanks to your instructions, I was able to get IcedTea back.
However, still cannot get the Sun libnpjp2.so plugin to run on FF.
Here is the list of java alternatives.
]# alternatives --config java
There are 3 programs which provide 'java'.
Selection Command
-----------------------------------------------
* 1 /usr/java/default/bin/java
+ 2 /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.6.0-openjdk/bin/java
3 /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.5.0-gcj/bin/java
And here is the list of java plugin alternatives.
# alternatives --config libjavaplugin.so
There are 2 programs which provide 'libjavaplugin.so'.
Selection Command
-----------------------------------------------
* 1 /usr/java/default/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so
+ 2 /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.6.0-openjdk/lib/i386/IcedTeaPlugin.so
The files exist, so I don't understand the problem.
# ls -alFch /usr/java/default/bin/java
-rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 47K Dec 3 17:17 /usr/java/default/bin/java*
# ls -alFch /usr/java/default/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so
-rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 76K Dec 3 17:17 /usr/java/default/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so*

Two Instances of Nouveau Running
by Patrick Bartek
$ps -ef shows, in part:
root 178 2 0 09:06 ? 00:00:00 [nouveau/0]
root 179 2 0 09:06 ? 00:00:00 [nouveau/1]
Is this normal? I don't recall ever having two.
I recently replaced my LG Flatron L1960TR-BF (4:3 ratio) with an Asus VN242 (16:9). Could this be the cause of the two nouveau's? I'm not running a dual monitor set up. And never have.
The switch over went fine with only a minor glitch with the panels. No other problems, then or now.
In any case, can (or should) I remove one--and which one--and how best to do that?
Fedora 12-64-bit. Basically stock. GNOME. EVGA GeForce 8400GS graphics card. 3D not enabled. Fully updated at the time.
Thanks.

Also, when I installed hfsutils-x11, nothing appeared to be installed.
I'm using Fedora 13.
