F12/13: Gnome Desktop Session saves - do not work
by Dan Thurman
I am getting all sorts of wierd problems trying to
get the gnome desktop sessions save to work,
and it does not work most of the time or at least
I cannot save the durn thing at least once you know,
like the Ronco: "Save it and forget it!" sort of thing...
ok, ok, so I embellished it.
When is this gonna get fixed - or - shall I ask, has
anyone else besides me have an issue with this?
Sigh... Ubuntu got it right, so when is Fedora gonna
get it right?
Fedora is my favorite distro but come on, it has not
worked right since F9 (barely), at least for me...
grumbling....

Ripping CDs to ALAC
by SternData
I currently rip my CDs into flac using "Audio CD Extractor" and, having
installed Fluke on my Mac, can play them using iTunes.
I've also discovered that Rhythmbox can play ALAC encoded .m4a files.
Does anyone have a profile for Audio CD Extractor that directly creates
lossless ALAC files in an .m4a wrapper?

gtkam
by Walter Cazzola
Hi all,
I'm just passed to the fedora flavor of linux after a more than 5 years
using mandrake/mandriva.
I'm pretty happy with the passage but I'm still looking for some of the
applications I was using with mandriva or a good replacement.
I was used to download pictures from my camera by using gtkam but yum
can't find it. I tried to install the mandriva version but it breaks the
dependencies. Can I install gtkam on my fedora and if yes how? otherwise
does it exist a good alternative to it better if for kde.
Thanks for the help
Walter

Suspend "lid switch" & NetworkManager
by d p
I find that the following update causes suspend/resume to fail:
==========================================================================
Updating:
NetworkManager i686 1:0.8.1-4.git20100817.fc13
NetworkManager-glib i686 1:0.8.1-4.git20100817.fc13
NetworkManager-gnome i686 1:0.8.1-4.git20100817.fc13
==========================================================================
The suspend appears to happen normally, but resume seems to do very
little, and ends with a blank screen. I think it makes no entry in
"messages". I haven't noticed anyone else reporting this.
The laptop is Dell 9400:
Nvidia 7900GS, Kernel 6.33.8-149.fc13.i686.PAE
Thanks

Lots of mirror errors on yum
by Edmon Begoli
Hi,
When I recently run yum install on my virtual Fedora 13 (my test machine)
I get into lots of 404 http errors on mirrors.
I suspect that this has to do something with this Fedora not
being as frequently updated as my physical one, so I would like
to know if there is something I can do with my yum to eliminate these
inaccessible mirrors.
Thank you in advance,
Edmon

[OT] general C++ question
by Christoph Höger
Hi all,
I just learned about closures in the Boost library and wanted to write
some shorter code. To test, I used the following snippet:
#include <iostream>
#include <string>
#include <boost/function.hpp>
#include <boost/bind.hpp>
class FakeVisitor {
public:
virtual void visit(int e) {}
virtual void visit(std::string e) = 0;
};
template <typename T> class GenericVisitor : public FakeVisitor {
public:
boost::function<void (T e)> f;
virtual void visit(T e) { f(e); }
};
void print(int a, int i) {
std::cout << a << ":" << i << std::endl;
}
int main(int argc, char** argv) {
GenericVisitor<int> v;
v.f = boost::bind(&print, 0, _1);
v.visit((int) 1);
v.visit(std::string("hallo"));
//boost::bind(print, 1, _1)(2);
}
Apparently, it does not work. Does anyone know why GenericVisitor<int>
does not inherit visit(std::string)?

Changing permissions to LVM block device using udev rules
by Roberto Fichera
Hi All in the list,
I'm just fighting with udev rules in a F13 environment about setting
permissions (group, owner and mode) to certain block devices created
from a LVM storage so that they become persistent across reboots.
Does anyone give me some hints.
Thanks in advance.
Roberto Fichera.

Thanks for your suggestion. It still fails with:
2.6.34.6-47.fc13.i686.PAE
NetworkManager-0.8.1-4.git20100817.fc13.i686
Perhaps I should add that it is using nouveau and no xorg.conf.
Thanks again.

xorg.conf is pretty much redundant these days.
You need to do some diagnosis with submitting a Bugzilla report as your
goal or, hopefully, finding the problem. With regard to the report,
heep in mind that the better the evidence, the more likely you are to
get a fix.
For starters, have a look at /var/log/pm-suspend.log. The actions taken
in suspending and resuming are recorded there. Look for actions that
are not recorded as 'success' or 'not applicable'. Towards the end, if
everything is working, you should see something like:
Thu Sep 2 14:32:17 PDT 2010: performing suspend
Thu Sep 2 16:21:02 PDT 2010: Awake.
Thu Sep 2 16:21:02 PDT 2010: Running hooks for resume
You might also have a look at
http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/power/basic-pm-
debugging.txt
Good luck.
Geoff. Thanks again for your help.
Before the update to NetworkManager, pm-suspend looks fairly
straightforward, with the "resume" section starting with the
line showing date, time, and the word "Awake".
After the update the suspend is identical, but the resume
section is completely missing. Not even the Awake comment!
That makes it difficult for me to do anything.
