NodeJS
by Scott van Looy
Hello - I'm looking in Rawhide and can't find any reference to NodeJS yet?
I see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=634911
Is it likely that this will be in the next release of Fedora, does anyone
know?
Scott

dell e6500 lost fn-f8 key with 2.6.32 kernels
by Brian Millett
In the 2.6.32 kernels, I've seemed to have lost the ability to use the
fn-f8 key to togle external displays. Using xev I see that
KeyPress event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x5800001,
root 0x15a, subw 0x5800002, time 869383, (55,45), root:(93,132),
state 0x50, keycode 33 (keysym 0x70, p), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (70) "p"
XmbLookupString gives 1 bytes: (70) "p"
XFilterEvent returns: False
KeyRelease event, serial 35, synthetic NO, window 0x5800001,
root 0x15a, subw 0x5800002, time 869531, (55,45), root:(93,132),
state 0x50, keycode 33 (keysym 0x70, p), same_screen YES,
XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (70) "p"
XFilterEvent returns: False
This works just fine with the 2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.x86_64, but not
with any of the 2.6.32 kernels.
Any hints?
Thanks.

What replaces this bit of HAL?
by Tom Horsley
I keep reading that HAL is going away to be replaced by
a scattering of separate bits, but I can't figure out
what is supposed to replace HAL to achieve the equivalent
in a program I'm working on:
This program recognizes PTP capable cameras that are plugged
and unplugged from time to time. I get DBUS system messages
(containing the HAL udi string) on the plug/unplug event,
and I can lookup things like the USB bus and device numbers
which are needed by libgphoto2 by calling HAL functions to
query properties.
So if HAL is going away, what the heck is the official
recommended way to achieve these same results without HAL?

grub-install problem -
by Bob Goodwin
I've moved some drives around, trying to get F-14 and Win XP to dual
boot. Started with a working F14. Added a third drive that had XP
already installed, had to put it in the first slot or Windows refused to
boot. Now only Windows boots.
From Linux rescue:
sh-4.1# grub-install /dev/sda
/dev/sdc2 does not have any corresponding BIOS drive.
I don't have the slightest idea what that is trying to tell me?
Help!

Expanding an LVM partition at the front
by Matthew Saltzman
I deleted the partition immediately in front of an LVM physical volume.
I'd like to use the freed space as part of the LVM volume group. I know
I could create a new partition in the same place, make it a physical
volume and add it to the group, but because the space is contiguous, I
wondered if it is possible just to move the front of the existing PV
partition to include the freed space.
I tried changing the start of the partition using fdisk, but then the PV
is no longer recognized by LVM. I suppose that means that there is
information about the PV stored in a particular location at the front of
the partition. Putting the starting point back makes the PV
recognizable again.
So is there a utility that can move the front of a physical volume
partition? (gparted and fdisk apparently can't).
TIA.

USB 3.0 support, and results.
by Lamar Owen
For future information searches.....
Bought a USB 3.0 external 2.5 inch hard drive the other day (WD 500GB 'My Passport Essential'), and bought a Goe (Generic off-eBay) ExpressCard USB 3.0 controller (generic NEC xHCI), and have now had opportunity to set up and test.
The first thing, of course, was to re-enable USB 3.0 (xHCI) functionality; found that on the F14 bugs page ( http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Common_F14_bugs#USB_3.0_ports_not_working ).
Once that was done, the WD drive came up fine, and at SuperSpeed. (I can see it now: USB 6.0, with LudicrousSpeed!) Sorry, I digress.
Anyway, I reformatted the drive (after copying the WD software off of it) as ext4, which was quite fast for a 500GB drive. Palimpsest (Disk Utility) tells me that it's connected at 705.0MB/s. How nice.
Read preformance is essentially what I would expect of a SATA or eSATA 2.5 inch laptop drive in the low-power category, with read performance, according to hdparm, clocking at roughly 50MB/s. That's slower than the internal drive, a decidedly non-low-power Seagate 7200RPM 500GB 2.5 inch Momentus SATA-II drive, which clocks in at 93.5MB/s (hdparm -t, of course, take it with a grain of salt), but faster than the Seagate 320GB USB2 external, which manages 28.24MB/s, not bad for USB2.
As the main purpose of the drive is for backups, I rsync'd my home directory over to it: roughtly 246GB of data in 2 hours and 8 minutes. Not bad at all, and less than half of the time it would have taken on the USB2 drive.
Bonnie++ results are as follows (hard to read in proportional font; view in fixed point to get things lined up):

Overall a good experience so far; we'll see how it goes over the next weeks and months.
Now I'm on the prowl for a USB3 version of my Thermaltake blaX drive doc.....and there are plenty of other brands out there, as I see with a quick look at eBay.
I do note, however, that transfers use more CPU than transfers with eSATA to the Thermaltake's eSATA port, and so that's definitely a consideration. But the USB3 drive doesn't need a second wire for power, and the equivalent eSATA (not eSATAp) enclosures, like the Rocketfish units I've been using.
