FC18: Cannot connect to wireless networks after latest update
by Stevo Slavić
Hello Fedora community,
After yesterdays update (see [1]) wireless stopped working on my hp 8710p
laptop. To be more precise, wireless appears as to be on but it does not
connect to local home wifi, and under Wireless network settings all wifi
networks appear as out of range. When I try to force to "Connect to a
Hidden Network" it tries to connect but fails (see [2]).
Is this issue known? I couldn't find anything related recently reported
(see [3]).
Anyone else experiencing this?
Any workarounds/suggestions are appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Kind regards,
Stevo Slavic.

<sigh> Downgrade F18??
by Beartooth
I've been having what seem inordinate troubles with F18 -- so
inordinate that I think I should try downgrading one PC back to F17; and,
if that works, hunker down and hang on till F19 gets released.
One of my biggest troubles is failure on all fronts to achieve a
real upgrade (i.e., keeping at least my existing selection of software,
if possible along with all my bookmarks and settings) rather than an
install new from scratch).
Can I even do that with F18 => F17? Is there a way to do it any
better than a fresh install and yet another whole day per machine adding
and removing, plus a day each for other tweaks??

Fedora 18: PostGIS/Postgresql interoperability
by Max Pyziur
Greetings,
Any guidence on when F18 PostGIS/Postgresql issues will be resolved?
Are there better forums where to post questions and follow discussions on
these issues?
Much thanks,

Subject: Fedora 18: PostGIS/Postgresql interoperability
Greetings,
Fedora 18 was released w/ Postgresql 9.2.x and PostGIS 1.5.x
As (I guess) it is known PostGIS 1.5.x won't work on Postgresql 9.2.
However, there haven't been any production PostGIS 2.0.- RPMs released;
however, there are some in testing. You also have to install the GDAL and GRASS
RPMs that are in testing.
Thanks to previous replies, I've downloaded those F18 PostGIS 2.0 rpms and they
function. I have don't a complete test, but I've migrated my spatialized
databases to Postgresql 9.2/PostGIS 2.0 and using both psql and Quantum GIS I
can access my projects.
However, there are still some issues, two of which that affect me.
1 - when doing a generalized "yum update" (to check for updates) I get the
following message:
root@mercury ~> yum update
Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit

You could try using --skip-broken to work around the problem
You could try running: rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest
So, there are potential problems based on different versions of gdal, grass,
and postgis.
2 - there was no postgis-jdbc 2.0 released for testing for Fedora 18;
That makes using something like OpenJUMP (Open Java Unified Mapping Program)
not useable. (I use both Q-GIS and OpenJUMP).
Any sense of when there could be a postgis-jdbc 2.0.x package available?
Much thanks to all,
Max Pyziur

hot add memory fedora 18?
by Gianluca Cecchi
Hello,
this was true for RHEL and CentOS on VMware
"
To set the memory online in RHEL and CentOS:
Note: These instructions work for RHEL and CentOS. Other distributions
may be different.
Run this command to check the state of the memory, looking for memory
that appears offline:
grep line /sys/devices/system/memory/*/state
If memory appears as offline, set it to online with the command:
echo online > /sys/devices/system/memory/memory[number]/state
"
In Fedora 18 I don't see this files' structure, how did they change in
kernels 3.x?
What would be hot add memory procedure for 3.7.9-201.fc18.x86_64 kernels?
Thanks in advance,
Gianluca

Evolution fails to ask for password giving total freeze
by Dr J Austin
Hi
Hoping someone can help - my main app is failing!
Following a recent update evolution no longer functions
An error is given in orange window
"Error while performing operation
IMAP command failed: Please login first"
This is normal, however no Popup Window is given to permit login
Evo is then frozen
On a second machine that I have not updated today evo is fine, the popup
appears
(This is using the same system login and mail account, ldap and NFS4)
ie same home directory and hence the same ~/.config/evolution directory
yum update on the working machine shows that it wants to update the rpms
listed below - needless to say I haven't installed the updates on this
machine
It's not the kernel as I booted from the previous kernel on the
failing machine and it still fails
Any thoughts as to which of the following is the culprit ?
Has anyone else the same problem ?
Thanks
John

Why does Fedora 18 hate me?
by Bill Murray
Sorry for the title...but F18 is REALLY sick.
I posted under "Freeze failures with F18" but no-one tried answered.
It just happened again. I installed kernel 3.7.9-201.fc18.x86_64. I was
able to
suspend twice - and it stops again. With the same error as before
Freezing user space processes ...
[ 982.758476] Freezing of tasks failed after 20.01 seconds (1 tasks
refusing to freeze, wq_busy=0):
[ 982.758631] rmmod D ffff8801be613cc0 0 1008 968
0x00000084
Please, a laptop that does not suspend is a complete pain. Can anyone
suggest how to debug this?
How do I find out what module did not remove?
Bill

Partial upgrade
by Joe Zeff
I finally got the upgrade to run by commenting out the line in
/etc/fstab mounting my old Windows drive. However, it didn't install a
new F 17 kernel and it still thinks I'm running F 16. Will this work:
yum upgrade releasever=17
and if not, why not?

F17 cursor crazy
by Beartooth
This morning, poking around in various menus to try to find a way
to enlarge my mouse cursor, I seem to have clicked on something I
shouldn't have. Now, every time I leave the mouse cursor on anything
clickable, it clicks itself after a few seconds.
No doubt this is a feature for some, but to me it just makes the
computer crazy as a bedbug.
What is it, and how do I turn it back off??
