WiFi permanently disappeared after booting test kernel
by Mike Fleetwood
Hi,
On my netbook I booted a test kernel 3.8.0-rc4+ I compiled. Now after
booting back into my regular Fedora kernel 3.6.11-5.fc17.i686.PAE my
wifi network device remains permanently disappeared. No wifi networks
displayed in Network Manager gui. Also the Network Manager syslog
messages make it look like the device has completely disappeared.
Suggestions for restoring wifi welcome.
Thanks
Mike

losing WiFi Access - prompted for password
by SternData
F18...
Over the last few days, I'm getting prompted to re-enter my password for
my WiFi network. It's not the router because no other device on the
network seems to be having problems.
Potential changes on my system include

Given that this has really started the day before yesterday, I suspect
it has something to do with the NetworkManager update. Is anyone else
having this problem?
(Please -- do not tell me to "dump the evil NetworkManager". I'm trying
to solve a problem here, not make some stand against the tide. Thanks.)

FC20 and (":No such file or directory)
by Gregory P. Ennis
Everyone,
I have created a new F20 install on a Toshiba laptop this afternoon, and
everything has gone well until I tried to set the laptop up for our
system with some perl scripts.
Some of the perl scripts worked fine, but one script would not activate
and resulted in a command line error message of :
(": No such file or directory)
I added the parenthesis, but the initial single quote is part of the
message. I have evaluated the perl script and have run it on other
machines without difficulty.
I finally got the script to work by adding a -w switch to the first line
in the form of :
#!/usr/bin/perl -w
I am posting this to record the problem and solution for others.

Text selection and mouse button sensitivity
by Jerry Feldman
I am running F20 with the latest updates, and recently there is a
problem with text selection. While it is very prevalent in Thunderbird,
I also had the problem In Firefox and in gnome terminal. Since this
occurs across applications, I then installed KDE Plasma to eliminate
Gnome. The problems definitely occur in KDE as well as Gnome 3.10.3.
Additionally, I'm seeing some similar problems on Konsole.
The problem is that in some cases when I try to select text I either
cannot select an entire body of text. or sometimes a substitution is
done. I also noticed that in Thunderbird sometimes when I left click on
a button, it tends to double click.
I sometimes run Thunderbird at work via X over IP therough an SSH tunnel
to RHEL 5.10, and the problem does not occur so it seems that the issue
appears with the local X server. As an example, I clicked at the end of
the previous sentence and the background panel came up, so it seems that
it is not restricted to an application or rendering engine. At this
point I am wondering if anyone else had a similar problem.

Hard Freezes with F20 on Lenovo ThinkPad T430
by Oliver Ruebenacker
Hello,
I'm having multiple hard freezes a day with Fedora 20 on a Lenovo
ThinkPad T430. Display stops moving, even mouse cursor, with no previous
warning. I have the problem since Fedora 19.
Any ideas?
I'm copying a few lines from /var/log/messages showing lines from some
time before the crash until the restart (see below).
Thanks!
Best,
Oliver

Most Efficient Network File sharing protocol?
by Dan Mossor
What do y'all consider the most efficient network file system? NFS? SMB?
SFTP?
I've been doing a lot of file transfers across the network, and have
been, well, less than impressed with the performance of NFS.
I haven't set up a samba server yet (and I wasn't sure the SMB protocol
itself would support hard links, even if the underlying file system did).
SFTP seems like it would put too much of a load on the CPU with the
encryption, and in fact, I almost cooked an RPi by transferring stuff
through SFTP and SSHFS.
What am I forgetting about?

fedora 20 firewalld multicast DLNA
by Rich Emberson
Setting up a media server on a Fedora 20 box.
It must have reception of multicast messages enabled.
If I do a 'iptables -F' blowing away the firewall, then
the media server sees the smart tv and the smart tv sees the media server.
Given the default firewall that comes with Fedora 20 and firewalld,
how do I add configuration info to it so that multicast messages are
enabled?
This is a pretty general "how to configure firewalld so that Fedora can be
used as a DLNA media server" question.
Thanks

what just happened (time went backwards?)
by Neal Becker
This f20 server has been running just fine for months. Today it became
unresponsive. Couldn't ssh into it (ping ok). Not thrashing disk (disk light
not continuously on).
I hit the power button and rebooted. After reboot, checked /var/log/messages:
