dnf crash
by Eyal Lebedinsky
While it mostly works, this specific command fails:
$ dnf provides '*/Droid Sans*'
This is consistent, and also happens on a second machine. Both run f27 fully updated.
The following does work:
$ dnf provides '*/Droid*'
But this one crashes:
$ dnf provides '*/x y*'
I suspect a python problem. Anyone else sees these crashes?

My issue starts with gdm, with gnome shell taking up to 800% of the cpu
and causing, ctrl+alt+F2 to switch to another login to time out, and if
I launch gnome from gdm the issue with gnome shell continues and causes
gnome itself to lag. If I log into kde from gdm instead of logging into
gnome the performance issue ceases and things go back to normal. If I
use kdm as the display manager, launching kde does not cause any
performance issues, and, if I launch gnome from kdm there are no
performance issues either, with gnome shell running normally and not
thrashing the cpu, so from my perspective the issue is gdm. The next
question is how do I fix it?

Claws-Mail filters -
by Bob Goodwin
I wanted to try Claws-Mail but after several days of sporadic attempts
to filter messages into my usual directories I am ready to admit defeat
and remove Claws. It was installed via dnf in this updated Fedora 27. I
asked on the Claws list but there was no response.
As a last resort perhaps someone can give me an example of a working set
of entries for the filter menu? I tried what appeared reasonable based
on what help I found in google but it always refused to save.

does fedora version of bash recognize SYS_BASH_LOGOUT?
by Robert P. J. Day
was reading "man bash" and ran across this:
"When an interactive login shell exits, or a non-interactive login
shell executes the exit builtin command, bash reads and executes
commands from the files ~/.bash_logout and /etc/bash.bash_logout, if
the files exists."
i was totally unaware of the system-wide logout file
/etc/bash.bash_logout, so i tested it and it seemed to have no effect,
so i RTFS for bash and, in the CHANGES file, there was this from way
back:
"This document details the changes between this version,
bash-2.0-beta2, and the previous version, bash-2.0-beta1.
... snip ...
There is a new #define available in config.h.top: SYS_BASH_LOGOUT.
If defined to a filename, bash reads and executes commands from that
file when a login shell exits. It's commented out by default."
sure enough, in the current source in that file:
/* System-wide .bashrc file for interactive shells. */
/* #define SYS_BASHRC "/etc/bash.bashrc" */
/* System-wide .bash_logout for login shells. */
/* #define SYS_BASH_LOGOUT "/etc/bash.bash_logout" */
so if red hat builds bash based on the source as it is, then that
variable is still commented out and the man page is misleading.

I created 4 pdf files using 'touch 123.pdf' through '126.pdf'
find . -name "*.pdf" | tail -n 2
does not 'find' the files in canonical order: it outputs 124.pdf and 126.pdf
Neither does .... | xargs tail -n 2
Trying:
tail -n 2 $(find . -name "*.pdf")
gives:
==> ./125.pdf <==
==> ./123.pdf <==
==> ./124.pdf <==
==> ./126.pdf <==
NOT in order and ignores the 'tail -n 2'
tail -n 2 $(find . -name "*.pdf"| sort) gives the files in order, but
ignores the tail count.
HOWEVER this works:
find . -name "*.pdf" | sort | tail -n 2
./125.pdf
./126.pdf

Ahh, well you should *said* so. We all went running off in all
directions *at once*!
This time I created 4 files 123.txt, 124.txt etc. each with 10 lines
numbered 1 to 10
To get the last 5 lines of every ".txt" file
Use:
$ for file in $(find . -name "*.txt"); do cat $file | tail -n 5; done
To display the filename, and last 5 lines of each of the last 2 files
Use:
$ for file in $(find . -name "*.txt" | sort | tail -n 2); do echo
$file; cat $file | tail -n 5; done
Output is:
./125.txt
7
8
9
10
./126.txt
7
8
9
10
YOu may have to be careful about the use of the 'sort' pipe: you may
need to add a switch to enforce a particular sort order. Sort can leave
you out of sorts that way.

That exercise was left for those adventurous students with an inquiring
mind to attempt and to ascertain the answer for themselves....
But for those without a computer to run the code or the intellectual
musculature to open a console and type a line or two, (or for that
matter, read this, since you obviously cannot own a computer..), the
answer is:
$find . -name "*.pdf" | sort
./123.pdf
./124.pdf
./125.pdf
./126.pdf

Rhythmbox (podcasts) and Pavucontrol
by Jonathan Ryshpan
* When rhythmbox finishes playing an episode, what does it play next? If it's playing from the queue and there is another episode on the queue, that plays next. If it's the last item on the queue, it's not clear: sometimes rhythmbox plays an episode from the track list, sometimes it stops playing. Ditto when playing something from the track list.
* I have two output devices. Sometimes when rhythmbox finishes playing an episode using one output device, as chosen by pavucontrol, the output device used changes (without my requesting it). Why is this? Is there any way to keep the output device constant?
* My version of rhythmbox doesn't match its documentation as brought up by its "Help" option. Is there up to date documentation anywhere?
System is
* Real Intel Hardware
* Fedora-27
* KDE Frameworks 5.43.0
* Rhythmbox 3.4.2

tail for a list of files
by bruce
Hey..
Trying to figure out how to do a single line cmd (it should be
possible right??) to do a tail -5 for a list of files???
I thought I could combine find with exec/xargs and tail to generate
the list of files/tail data.. But couldn't figure out the syntax..
thoughts??
find /foo -name "*dog.dat ... tail -5 << obviously not correct. but
what would work?
thanks..

Fedora 26 & 27 are unable to boot with normal graphic mode on this PC
with AMD/ATI RS740 [Radeon 2100] GPU
by Farhad Mohammadi Majd
Hello, I have an old PC from 2008 which has integrated graphics processors (IGP), I did install Fedora 26 few months ago and it had mentioned problem, I used "nomodeset" kernel parameter for boot during installation and local boot, but I didn't report the problem.
Today I did install Fedora 27 (Fedora-Workstation-Live-x86_64-27-1.6) and same problem was exist, fortunately Fedora 27 is smarter and it added "nomodeset" kernel parameter to the GRUB configuration file for local boot, so there is no need to enter it manually to GRUB.
<CODE>
$ lspci | grep VGA
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RS740 [Radeon 2100]
<CODE>
Please guide me step-by-step to solve this problem, thank you.
