Xfce 4.14?
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
Fedora 29
Xfce 4.13
I have a customer interested in me putting Fedora 29
on a laptop.
Problem: Xfce 4.13 is too buggy to release on the general
public. Me, I am loyal and know how to cope with the bugs,
but a typical user, I would not wish that on them.
Is 4.14 anywhere near?
If not, is there a way to lock Fedora 29 into Xfce 4.12?
If not, I guess Mate would be the closest alternative.
I could always go with gnome, but it has a bad case of
the weirds.
Many thanks,

Need a statement on Fedora's purpose
by ToddAndMargo
Hi All,
I just had a vendor tell me they do not support Fedora Server
because the the developers of Fedora had stated that it is not
a stable release and is used only as a testing ground for Red
Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). And as such, they only supported
RHEL and Cent OS.
Huh ??????
Fedora is more stable in my experience that RHEL ever was. When
I was running Scientific Linux (clone of RHEL of CentOS) I
almost went INSANE!
Is there a statement from the Fedora developers somewhere that
I could send this vendor to straighten him out?
Many thanks,

Firefox does not connect to a secure page
by Enrique Artal
Hi,
I have a problem with firefox trying to connect to a page of my university (address below). This is the error message:
Secure Connection Failed
An error occurred during a connection to rrhh.unizar.es. Cannot communicate securely with peer: no common encryption algorithm(s). Error code: SSL_ERROR_NO_CYPHER_OVERLAP
The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.
Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem.
It also occurs with seamonkey but it works without problems with chrome and chromium. Other colleagues with other linux systems do not have this issue. Other colleague installed fedora in a virtual machine and had the same problem. Best, Enrique.

Frequent temporary freezes on Dell XPS 13 laptop
by Dennis Jacobfeuerborn
Hi,
I just got my new XPS 13 (the 2019 model) and installed Fedora 29 on it.
Everything looks great except that when I work in the shell I experience
a freeze of the system that lasts for about 1-2 seconds and that occurs
every 30-60 seconds which is quite annoying.
I tried isolating the issue by working in an xterm but this shows the
same symptoms as the gnome terminal I usually use. There is nothing in
the logs that correlates with these freezes and it only seems to occur
in a shell.
What is really strange is that when I have glxgears running in a window
then the animation there will also freeze when the freeze in the shell
happens but when I have a youtube video running in Firefox then the
freezes disappear completely and I can work normally in the shell.
This happens both in a Wayland and X11 session.
Does anyone have an Idea what could cause this strange issue and how I
can debug this further?
Regards,
Dennis

what means httpd dependency of "config(httpd) = 2.4.38-4.fc30"?
by Robert P. J. Day
undoubtedly a simple question, but a friend asked me about this
yesterday, and threw a wrinkle into it. (i'm running on fedora 30
branched but that should make no difference.)
if i ask for the package dependencies of, say, httpd, among
everything else, i get the line:
config(httpd) = 2.4.38-4.fc30
i've always interpreted that as, "a proper install of httpd requires
all of its corresponding config files installed," and i've known for a
while that one can list the config files of any installed package
with:
$ rpm -qc httpd
/etc/httpd/conf.d/autoindex.conf
/etc/httpd/conf.d/userdir.conf
/etc/httpd/conf.d/welcome.conf
/etc/httpd/conf.modules.d/00-base.conf
/etc/httpd/conf.modules.d/00-dav.conf
/etc/httpd/conf.modules.d/00-lua.conf
/etc/httpd/conf.modules.d/00-mpm.conf
/etc/httpd/conf.modules.d/00-optional.conf
/etc/httpd/conf.modules.d/00-proxy.conf
/etc/httpd/conf.modules.d/00-systemd.conf
/etc/httpd/conf.modules.d/01-cgi.conf
/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
/etc/httpd/conf/magic
/etc/logrotate.d/httpd
/etc/sysconfig/htcacheclean
$
is that what the above dependency refers to? that httpd has, as
dependencies, its own config files as displayed by "rpm -qc"? if it
doesn't, i've been confused all this time, but that's not the wrinkle.
said friend then asked, "can a package have, as a dependency, the
config files of some *other* package?" i had to think about that, and
admitted i wasn't sure, as that sounded like a strange dependency, as
i would think the first package would simply depend on the second
package in its entirety, not just on its config files, but i wasn't
sure.
thoughts? am i thinking about this the right way, or have i been
mistaken all this time?

Missing typdefs and usb.h for Soarer's Converter
by Leander Hutton
I'm trying to compile Soarer's Converter on Fedora 29 and running into
typedef problems. This is a somewhat old utility for programming USB
converters for old terminal and XT keyboards based on an Arduino Teensy.
More info here on that here:
https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=17458.0
I have libusb-devel installed and /usr/include/usb.h and
/usr/include/stdint.h are both present. Running the included makefile
for the Linux build just dumps unknown type name errors for u_int8_t and
u_int16_t:
/usr/include/usb.h:81:2: error: unknown type name ‘u_int8_t’
u_int8_t bLength;
^~~~~~~~
/usr/include/usb.h:82:2: error: unknown type name ‘u_int8_t’
u_int8_t bDescriptorType;
^~~~~~~~
/usr/include/usb.h:87:2: error: unknown type name ‘u_int8_t’
u_int8_t bLength;
^~~~~~~~
Tested compiling the code on Debian and Ubuntu with the equivalent
libraries installed and it produces the binaries just fine, so I must be
missing something on the Fedora procedure. It's almost like it's missing
the stdint.h header but I've verified it's present. The binaries I
compiled on the Debian install even work just fine on F29 which leads me
to believe I'm just missing a -devel package needed to compile it.
Thought maybe it needed the avr-libc package and it's headers but that
didn't seem to help.
Unfortunately the original person who wrote this code has long since
vanished but Teensy stuff is pretty popular so I thought it'd be worth a
shot to ask here! I haven't messed with any other Teensy code myself.
Thanks!

Older Fedora AMIs to be deleted
by Sayan Chowdhury
Hi,
There has been a huge backlog of the nightly Fedora AMIs. So, today I
will be deleting kicking off the process to purge the older AMIs.
The process that I would be following to delete the AMIs is:
- The launch permission of the AMIs will be removed.
- I'll wait for 20 days. This is the time period when you can check if
any of the Fedora AMIs which is meant to be deleted affects you. If
yes, connect back to us via the mailing list or IRC and I'll have a
look at it.
- After 20 days, I will delete all the AMIs whose launch permission
was removed previously.
I hope to publish a list of AMIs that were purge after the completion
of the process.
For any questions find me on #fedora-cloud

"dracut: FAILED:" with dnf upgrade to the 5.0.3-200.fc29.x86_64
kernel.
by Doug Herr
After a dnf upgrade that included the new 5.x kernel I did my regular
check to make sure that the nvidia driver got built via akmod-nvidia-
340xx-340.107-5.fc29.x86_64. It was not there, so I looked more closely
at the output of the 'dnf upgrade' and found that:
dracut: FAILED: /usr/lib/dracut/dracut-install -D
/var/tmp/dracut.ReYjXp/initramfs -H --kerneldir /lib/modules/5.0.3-
200.fc29.x86_64/ -o -m =drivers/net/phy =drivers/ net/team
=drivers/net/ethernet ecb arc4 bridge stp llc ipv6 bonding 8021q ipvlan
macvlan af_packet virtio_net xennet
Full output is at:
https://paste.fedoraproject.org/paste/qKIPdK4OB8JGmGH6g8LQEA
Line 234 is where it shows the issue.
I have not yet rebooted, but I tend to assume that a reboot into my
current 4.20.16-200.fc29.x86_64 will still be fine but clearly it will
have trouble trying to boot to 5.x
