Dnf skipped -
by Bob Goodwin
For the last three mornings I've been seeing dnf update skipped two rpms
but have seen no complaints on this list so It seems like time to ask
about it:
Skipped:
VirtualBox-6.1.4-1.fc31.x86_64 VirtualBox-server-6.1.4-1.fc31.x86_64
Complete!
I installed virtualbox in anticipation of F-32beta but I have not
installed anything in a vm yet if that matters?

Using Steam with Fedora
by Patrick O'Callaghan
For several years I've been using a Windows VM with passthrough
graphics as a gaming platform. It works pretty well, but ties up
machine resources even when idle, so I'm now experimenting with Valve's
Linux version of Steam with the Proton additions to the Wine libraries.
I've disabled the VM, installed the latest proprietary Nvidia drivers,
modified grub appropriately and rebooted. The Nvidia modules are
loaded. The nvidia-settings command shows the GPU.
However when I run games under Steam, they are using the internal Intel
GPU, making this configuration essentially unusable for AAA gaming
(i.e. games will start but are unplayably slow). I can find no
documentation on how to change this (whether via a global Steam option
or even individually for each game).
For the record, Linux Steam is a 32-bit executable, but I don't think
this should affect anything (my machine is 64-bit).
Has anyone done this successfully on Fedora? There are any number of
Google hits on similar themes, but mainly focussed on Ubuntu, which is
what Valve are mostly aiming at.

prep. for upgrade.
by home user
stand-alone home workstation; f30; dual-boot (with windows-7); Gnome
(mainly).
I plan to upgrade to f31 in about a month. I looked thru the
instructions for the upgrade. I know that beforehand,
* I should do a back-up, and
* that I should download the Fedora Workstation Live image to a USB stick.
F31 seems to have had more problems than the past several (6+ years) of
releases. I don't have any data; that's just my impression based on
this list. (I am curious what actual data would show.)
question 1:
In addition to doing a back-up and making a live image USB stick, what
preparations should I make to, within reason, minimize the probability
of problems when I do the upgrade?
question 2:
How do a make an f30 Fedora Workstation Live image on my USB stick? I
found a place in the Fedora website to do f31, but I seriously want f30
for this.
Thank-you!
Bill.

centos 8 mock built rpm was unexplained dep in /usr/bin/python
by Barry Scott
I'm packaging pylint for python2 on centos8 and it builds fine but will not install.
(Yes I know python2 is end of life - working on it)
mock is used to do the builds.
Here is what happens with I do the dnf install:
# dnf install -y ods-python-pylint

ods-python-configparser

rpmlib(FileDigests) <= 4.6.0-1
rpmlib(PayloadFilesHavePrefix) <= 4.0-1

Anyone know where is the /usr/bin/python coming from or how I can debug this?

Reasons for staying on a old version ( Re: Prepping for upgrade)
by Christopher Marlow
I am just curious why people stay on old versions of Fedora like say
FC30 instead of upgrading to 31? I am guessing after a new version of
FC comes out, that the previous version is still supported for a
limited time?
Thanks,
Chris

Fedora Mate accessibility
by Devin Prater
Hi all. I just tried installing Fedora Mate into a virtual machine, using VmWare for accessibility reasons. I am blind, so use the Orca screen reader <https://github.com/GNOME/orca>. During installation, Orca works fine, although I had to turn up the sound volume using AlsaMixer in mate-terminal.
After installation, though, I must, again, turn up the volume through alsamixer, then start Orca. But, moving to the desktop, opening the applications menu and using arrow keys to move around, and pressing Alt + F2 and running terminal, Orca does not speak anything. After restarting a second time, Orca did turn on, but still didn’t read the log in screen. I just pressed Return, since I chose not to set a password for this test account on a test virtual machine. Still, Orca did not read the desktop after I logged in.
So, is there a step I’m missing? Or is Fedora Mate simply not designed to be accessible? As Mate is the desktop environment many blind people enjoy using, both because of the linear menus and light resources, I think some dedication should be set to making this spin of Fedora, one of the most up-to-date variants of Linux that is user friendly, accessible.
Thanks for any help with this.

detect bluetooth mouse connecting?
by Tom Horsley
I always need to run some ximput commands when my bluetooth
mouse connects, I'm wondering if I can automagically detect
the mouse connecting and run the commands so I never have
to remember to do it manually.
The only thing I've found so far that notices a new mouse connection
is messages for the device appearing in dmesg.
Once upon a time, I'd get dbus messages when connecting a
usb mouse, but I don't see anything showing up on dbus for
a bluetooth mouse.
Is there some well known way to detect new bluetooth connections
which I simply can't find in my googling?

Clone fedora 31 on new computer
by Robert McBroom
Windows 10 on nvme ssd. Two additional drives is the system. Desire to
put fedora on a partition of a gpt drive. Live system on usb drive but
the custom install sees only the entire drive not the desired
partitions. Set up for /boot,/ and /home. I have a repository with
current fedora 31 rpms on a network drive. Followed many threads on the
uefi bios and think I see how to add fedora to the boot sequence.
How do I tweak the install to go where I want it?
