Compressed arecord out -
by Bob Goodwin
arecord tstxx will produce a wav file and ffmpeg -i tstxx.mp3 to a file
aplay will play.
How can I put them together in one command or if there is a simpler and
better way, how to get a compressed output file from arecord?

Change UId range, renumber user ids
by Friedrich Schäuffelhut
Hello,
last year I set up a FreeIPA installation.
It works very well!
I lately discovered a problem with /etc/subuid and /etc/subgid
used by rootless Podman (may be also Docker) containers.
During setup we decided to start the UID range exactly at 100.000.
We picked that for no real reason other than we wanted a round number...
We thought it would make sense and din't give it a second though.
What we did not know at that time is: The /etc/subuid and /etc/subgid
system used by rootless Podman (may be also Docker) containers
also starts exactly with uid 100.000.
So now if we would add users to /etc/subuid and /etc/subgid those
users would be allowed using UID/GID fro the FreeIPA range.
This requires attention each time a user is added to /etc/subuid
and /etc/subgid and therefore can lead to potential security issues.
We use configuration management for setting up our systems but
we would prefer if we could achieve a safe default.
We would like to fix this without reinstalling FreeIPA.
We have already a number of hosts, users and certificates enrolled.
I am now looking for a way to move the FreeIPA UID range to
a different area, e.g. 10.000 - 20.000.
We run 3 replicas connected to each other.
I found the ipa comands 'idrange-add' and 'idrange-del' and
wonder if I could use those to
1. add a new range at 10.000
2. Update UIDs of existing users
3. remove the old range at 100.000.
I am a bit hesitant trying this without understanding
what complications I could run in.
Do you have any suggestions?
Best

Key was rejected by service
by Paolo Galtieri
Folks,
I have installed vmware on Fedora 33. It does not start due to the
following error:
modprobe vmmon
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'vmmon': Key was rejected by service
modprobe vmnet
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'vmnet': Key was rejected by service
dmesg shows
vmmon: Loading of unsigned module is rejected
The modules have been compiled from source. How do I get around this
issue so I can run vmware?
Any help is appreciated.

Windows 10 + F33 + SSD + RAID
by Paolo Galtieri
Folks,
I have a new dell laptop. I tried to install Fedora 33 on it, but it
failed to find any disks. I searched the internet and discovered that
if my BIOS has RAID enabled F33 is unable to find any drives. I
disabled RAID and enable AHCI and was then able to install and boot
F33. I then tried to boot Windows 10. This failed until I entered the
bitlock key. I then went back into the BIOS and re-enabled RAID and
verified Windows 10 boots without error, but Fedora 33 no longer does
since it can't find any drives. What if I want RAID enabled? Is there
a solution to this problem?

update-crypto-policies & Apache
by Jeffrey Ross
System is Fedora 33 I'm attempting to enable Perfect Forwarding Secrecy
(PFS) in Apache.
I started by setting the options I wanted in Apache only to find that
the SSL options for Ciphers are ignored in the Apache configuration and
instead are pulled from /etc/crypto-policies/back-ends directory.
I was able to disallow any TLS protocol below 1.2 in opensslcnf.config,
but not sure what I need to enable PFS.
Suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks Jeff

Re: Backing up system
by gmspro
Hi,
http://www.sysresccd.org/Download
With the SystemRescueCd I backed up the /dev/sda6 partition in /mnt/backup/ naming "diskimage"
After backing up operation the file has the automatic extension like "diskimage.000".
Is this file ok to restore?
If I name it "diskimage.gz" then it is automatically renamed with this extension "diskimage.gz.000"
But here below
http://www.sysresccd.org/Screenshots
the file is name like this:
"diskimage.pimg"
Do I have to name with the .pimg extension during backup to restore correctly?
And how can I restore it?

KERNELMODULE can have the format:

<module name>
.................
Does it matter? Should I just keep using 5.10.10 ?

why no glade module for python 3?
by Paolo Galtieri
Folks,
for years I've been using sbackup for doing my backups. I've tried
others and none come close to being as easy to use as sbackup.
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any further development occurring
on it. It was written originally to work with python2 and I have managed
to get it to work with python2 on FC31 and FC32. However, with the
removal of most of the necessary python2 packages from FC33 it no longer
works. So I tried to get it to run under python3, and the first problem
I encountered is the following:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/sbin/simple-backup-config", line 30, in <module>
import gtk.glade
ImportError: No module named glade
With python2 this module was located in
/usr/lib64/python2.7/site-packages/gtk-2.0/gtk/glade.so
from package
pygtk2-libglade-2.24.0-27.fc31.x86_64
This package does not exist in FC33 nor is there a corresponding package
for FC33. So why is there no glade.so module/package for python2 or
python3?
Since there is no pygtk2-libglade in FC33 I tried to port it, but it
fails if using with both python2 and python3 due to various errors, e.g.
the following when using python3
File "/usr/share/pygobject/2.0/codegen/codegen.py", line 429
except argtypes.ArgTypeError, ex:
^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax
make: *** [Makefile:1151: pango.c] Error 1
I don't want to try to port all the f31 python2 packages which are
needed, I tried and it's a pain :(
Any help is appreciated.
