I would expect the procedure would be no different than on an i386 platform.
If you are talking about the browser plug-in (and java-web-start stuff),
only i586 supports the plug-in, even in 1.6.0+ (I just checked).
IcedTea (which is a 1.7.0 JVM) in F8 should have applet support IIRC.

Precisely the same as the 32-bit version. Download it and install
it somewhere (I use /usr/local). For JRE 1.4.2, the actual plugin is:
/usr/local/j2re1.4.2/plugin/amd64/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so
So create a symlink from there to your
/usr/lib64/firefox-(version)/plugins directory. An ls -l of your
plugins directory should look sorta like:
# ls -l /usr/lib64/firefox-2.0.0.10/plugins
(extra stuff deleted)
libjavaplugin_oji.so -> /usr/local/j2re1.4.2/plugin/amd64/mozilla/libjavaplugin_oji.so
(note that that's from an F7 install and using JRE 1.4.2)

You are correct. Sun doesn't have a 64-bit version for Linux. You have
